Babies: 3 - 6 Months

What to do

DS no longer wants to be swaddled. If you try to swaddle him he grunts and cries. So we have quit swaddling as of Mon. the problem is that he keeps waking himself up. He only sleeps 30-40min at a time, this goes on all night, I am not sure what to do if anything. Has anyone gone through this, how can I help him sleep better.

Re: What to do

  • Looking forward to your responses. We've accomplished unswaddled naps, but unswaddled nights are up this weekend. FWIW DD refuses to nap longer than 45 mins unswaddled.

  • DD hated being swaddeled and would always wiggle out of them at night.  It would make me nervous so DH and I started swaddeling her w/1 arm out then graduated to her arms out and just her legs and torso swaddeled.  Then took it off all together.

We got lucky DS he loved being swaddeled and i decided one night when they went into thier own cribs that i would see how he does w/o being swaddeled b/c he would wake up every night while i was swaddeling him and it would drive me nuts.... he did great and we havent looked back since.  I actually find that once they get use to sleeping w/o it they are actually more comfortable and can wiggle out any gas in thier sleep.  Plus i think DD does gynastics in her sleep!!! hahaha she is definately working her muscles yet sleeping so for that im happy.

  • DD hated being swaddled from day one, and woke up a lot... now she sleeps on her tummy and gives us at least 5 hours at a time (last night she gave us 8.5hours... heaven!)
  • At 4 months, he's past the recommended age to be swaddled anyhow.  How did you wean him?  With my first DS, he got his arms out himself at about 3+ months, but we still wrapped his belly until we switched him to a regular sleepsack.  The transition process worked great for him.  Have you tried the Halo brand?  Not only do I love their product, but the sleepsacks were designed by a father who lost his child to SIDS.
