Sleep and Pacifier Questions

Levi has figured out how to roll over when he's swaddled for naps and bedtime.  I'd be fine with this, except that every time he rolls over, he wakes up and drops his pacifier.  Which, of course, starts him crying.  Last night we were up like 5 or 6 times, when normally he STTN 10-12 hours.

So I have 2 questions... one, how do I stop him from rolling over in his crib?

And two (ok, this one is like 10 questions...), when do I wean him off the paci?  It's really just driving me nuts now, since he wakes up nearly every time he drops it.  How do I wean him?  What happens then?  Is he going to be super fussy after that?  Am I going to have more difficulty calming him?  Is he going to start sucking his thumb instead?

Any guidance or good websites for help would be very appreciated.  Thank you!

Re: Sleep and Pacifier Questions

  • I call it "pacifier patrol" and have embraced it, I am not ready to wean him off the paci yet.

  • I read somewhere that when they fall asleep you are supposed to take it from their mouth so that doesn't happen. I do this with my DD and it works ...sometimes :)

  • DS doesn't take a paci, but my friend used to put 5 paci's in her daughter's crib so she could find one in her sleep.  I don't know when babies can do that.  But maybe it's something you can do in the future.  Maybe you can put a positioner so LO doesn't roll.

So what about when it doesn't work?  Do you put it back in?

  • We took it away cold turkey.  It worked well, but hasn't solved all our sleep problems.  We're starting Ferber tonight.
  • We took it cold turkey at 4 months because I didn't want to be beholden to a piece of plastic. The first day was rough, but after that our life has been great without it. I say quit cold turkey, the less dependent they are on it the easier your life will be!

  • For those of you who went cold turkey, did your LOs need their thumb or fist to soothe back to sleep?  Levi is swaddled, so he doesn't have access to a hand to suck on.  However, he DID break one arm out of his swaddle last night.  Maybe it's time to get rid of the swaddle too?  He's only broken out of this swaddler twice so far.
  • For what I understand (and have read), once LO's start rolling, swaddling should stop. (For us, we stopped swaddling once DD started breaking loose, which meant she was done with it). You can still, however swaddle from the waist down. As far as the paci goes, it's up to you on how you want to go about it. Our DD sleeps 8.5-9 hours, but we gotta get up maybe twice to re-binky her. I have yet to try to break her of the paci because she doesn't self soothe with a thumb or anything. I'm just afraid breaking her of her paci will bring back the sleepless nights, so we just deal with it for now.

    GL tho!!

I guess that applies even though he's only rolling when he's swaddled?  He can't roll on his own un-swaddled yet.
