TTC After a Loss

I think I have a LP defect

I had some brown spotting yesterday afternoon and today ? does this mean I could have a luteal phase defect?  There wasn?t much in TCOYF about it other than if your LP is less than 10 days.  FF says I?m 9 DPO.

My OB already told me she doesn?t think progesterone supplements do any good.  When I had the preconception appointment with the peri, she briefly mentioned them when discussing the possibility of a LP defect.  Are there any other testing or treatments for this?

Maybe I am overthinking things - if I am tell me.  It's only my first cycle TTC after the second D&C.

Re: I think I have a LP defect

  • Brown spotting at 9DPO could be implantation bleeding.  Unless you have a full on AF flow at 9 DPO, I wouldn't think you had a LP defect.

I hope the spotting means good things! :)

  • As long as it's not red flow and it's only spotting, you're good.  FF counts my spotting as part of my last cycle and part of my LP and red flow as a new cycle.

I usually start spotting 3 or 4 days before AF.

  • if your just spotting thats completely normal before af.  if it's actually flow starting on 9dpo then that's more likely to have a short LP.

  • I think it's worth bringing up.  Basically, you don't want to see the lining breaking down before implantation could occur, so ideally, you'd want no spotting before 10-11 dpo.  Technically, though, it's not an LPD if CD1 (full AF) comes more than 10 days after O.

It could still be post-D&C cycle weirdness, or implantation spotting.

  • i wouldn't be concerned by brown spotting.  if you had full red flow that would be a diff story.  also it is just your first cycle post D&C.  i would keep charting for two more cycles and see what your new normal will be.  if you do find that you have a shorter LP than you can try the B6 and/or natural progesterone cream.  it's like lotion that you rub into your skin.

  • Thanks for the info. ladies.  I highly doubt this is implantation spotting.  I gave up BD too early, because I thought I was having an anovulatory cycle.  In the past I've had some brown spotting a few days before AF.

  • It sounds a little similar to what what I went through ... Most Dr's say that if your luteal phase lasts anything under 10 days it is considered a luteal phase defect. But some doctors believe that if the luteal phase falls under 12 days, then it is a problem. If you conceive and you have a luteal phase defect, you will have an early miscarriage.

I think this is part of our problem, b/c my LP is ~ 10 days each non medicated cycle.  (I think, for me, it is based on the fact that my body does not produce enough FSH for the follies to develop.)  I have had spotting before AF since my first AF after my M/C.  This past cycle was one of the first times in which I did not have spotting- it is almost like my old cycles before my m/c.

Progeterone builds up the uterine lining.  It can do good, but I think that if you think you have this problem, find out why it is happening.  In my past research on it, I found that there are many causes.

    __________

Over the counter remedies for luteal phase defect:
The two main over the counter remedies for luteal phase defect are vitamin B6 and progesterone cream. Vitamin B6 is perfectly safe and can be taken daily in dosages from 50 mg to 200 mg. Taking vitamin B6 every day during the entire month will help to lengthen the luteal phase.

A progesterone cream is usually targeted for menopausal women; however this cream is also useful in lengthening the luteal phase. A cream with natural progesterone works best. Use about 1/4 to 1/2 a teaspoon of progesterone cream spread on the inner arm, inner thigh, neck, and chest - alternating places - twice a day from ovulation to menstruation or until the 10th week of pregnancy.

  • Hi Peetie!

I have to agree with the other ladies about the brown spotting. I would not worry about a short LP until you start getting a red flow.  The first couple cycles after my D&C my LP was 11 days so it definitely could affect things.  I also took a B6 complex vitamin after those cycles and my LP went back to "normal." Try not to over think it and stress about it just yet. Hang in there sweetie.
