3rd Trimester

Those being induced...anyone's doc doing it this way??

My induction (due to gestational diabetes) is scheduled for March 1st.  Wow, that's coming up quickly!

When I asked my OB how the induction works, this is what he told me...

I will go to his office at the end of the business day on March 1st and have a balloon catheter inserted through the cervix.  He says he believes this to be the most effective way to get the cervix dilating.  He did not mention anything about that cervical gel or any other thing that I hear most other induced mamas talking about.  So anyway after he inserts the balloon catheter, I go wait at home for the next several hours until midnight at which time I go check in to the hospital (he said to wait until midnight so that I don't get charged for another full hospital day).  Then at some point after I check in, the pitocin will be started, and if all goes well, LO will be born sometime during the day on March 2nd.

I have never heard of starting an induction with a balloon catheter in the cervix rather than with that gel on the cervix.  Has anyone else had it done this way, or heard of it being done this way?  I would love to hear some insight! :)

  • He's probably talking about a Foley bulb https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Foley_catheter

    It's pretty normal.  Good luck!

  • I had a four day induction with my DD (I obviously was not even close to being ready to go into labor) and my midwife used 2 foley bulbs, cervadil at night and a lot of pitocin.

I like your doctors plan, it sounds good!

  • good timing I am currently having it done.  I had it put in at 4 pm yesterday I went home ate dinner etc... came back at around 9.  It popped out at around 11 they checked me at 5 and I was almost 4 and 70 percent which is great I started finger tip and long.  They just started pitocin becasue I am not having regular contractions.  My doc did this becasue it is natural.

The problem with doing a medical induction before my body was ready is that my c-section chances increase and she does not want to do a c-section because I have scar tissue issues from past surgeries. Let me know if you have any questions.  When I had it put in it felt rough but did not hurt per say.
