Cow's milk before 1 year

Anyone here start cow's milk before 1 year old?  My supply is starting to tank and I am thinking to start introducing cow's milk soon.  If you did introduce it before 1 year how did you do it?

Re: Cow's milk before 1 year

  • Our pedi ok'd a slow transition starting three weeks before his first b-day.  We FF.  The first week we did 4oz. F 2 oz. milk, this week we are doing 3/3, next will be 2/4 then finally all whole (hopefully)

  • jhmo, I don't see a big problem with introducing it at 11 months rather than 12 given that the lo hasn't had any issues with formula or any solids.

There may be more people on 12-24 who could give you input about it.

  • I'd check with your pedi on this.  It's not advised to start cow's milk until 12 months because your LO needs the extra nutrients (especially iron) in BM/formula up to that point.

That being said, our pedi said we could switch DS cold turkey once he's a year if we wanted to.  He said some babies prefer to transition more slowly, but cold turkey is "medically" fine.

  • Thanks!  I'll try 12-24!

  • My DS will not take formula.  He will take milk with carnation instant breakfast, so I have been giving him that when I have to leave him (rarely), and when the meds I am taking for a cold take shrink my supply.  I plan to wean him over the next two month.  He is under weight, so I don't worry about the extra calories from the carnation.
  • My pedi gave me the go-ahead to introduce at 9mos.  I had always heard not until a year, so was surprised, but it was the best thing that could have happened as I knew I wanted to be done bf'ing at a year.  Starting at 9mos I would give them milk in a sippy with meals.  I never heated it or anything, just made sure they had a chance to give it a try on a regular basis.  After a few weeks of this & they were drinking more, I just started dropping a nursing session here & there & offering milk instead. Of course, they were having a great deal of solids as well.  By 11mos, my kids were on whole milk only during the day & nursing morning & night.  I dropped the night session first (since I thought it would be the hardest), then the morning & voila- from breast to cup by 1 year.

The bonus of doing it over an extended period of time like that was that my breasts didn't ever get engorged.  I had no physical discomfort of my own while weaning, and my kids had a nice, easy transition.  It worked so well the first time so when I did it the second I was totally confident in the process & it worked great!
