you know what I don't get....

traditionally Fridays and ash Wednesday were days of fasting,  no meat.   but I don't get where the sacrifice is when a person is "so excited about Lent because of all the good seafood I get to eat"  in exchange for the "sacrifices" they are making.   It's not fasting if you're pigging out on fried shrimp and fries or more pizza than you'd normally eat.

I was brought up catholic.  I never got this.   off to eat my little salad.

Re: you know what I don't get....

  • Good point. I have a friend who uses Lent as a diet.

    Says the non-catholic.

  • lol, yea, Lent was so not about getting to eat a seafood buffet! It was about grilled cheese and tomato soup on Friday nights and giving up something.

  • People are so weird.

It's funny b/c I self-describe as a HAC (half ass Catholic) due to my lack of church attendance, but I'm adhere to the "rules" much more than a lot of people I know who are at church every Sunday and describe themselves as "devout" Catholics.

  • Yeah, why bother with the sacrifice when the meaning behind it is lost?  DH and I are both former Catholics and in his house no meat fridays was a big deal since they were meat and potato people.  His mother still struggles trying to find something other than pasta and sauce to serve that night.

My parents never bothered doing it since we only ate meat 2-3 times a week to begin with so it wasn't really a sacrifice to us.  In fact, I don't think I would have noticed at all.  Instead we were encouraged to add charity work and give up something (I usually gave up chocolate, but always caved).

  • Funny enough, I took my girls to mass at 4:00, and this is what the homily was about. He encouraged people to give something back, rather than give something up.

I made pasta with vegetables for dinner tonight, and both girls just threw it on the floor...sigh

I was just explaining to my husband when he asked what I was giving up that I was going to give something back instead - which is what we did in Catholic grade school growing up.  haha!

He made fun of me, but I often think that makes more of a difference.

PS - also growing up I often tried to convince my mom I was giving up veggies.  Perhaps Emi and Gina were trying to tell you that?  LOL.

    HA! Maybe they are :)

Yes, I'm going to try to stop being such a b*tch, and try to go to church and have stronger faith in good times. Seems like I only turn to my faith when things are down, which isn't right.

  • Everyone has a different idea of fasting, I guess!  Since I'm always a veggie, I don't eat dairy on Wed or Fri.  My dinner was pretty pathetic today!  Enjoy your salad!
