Another daycare question to consider

Ask to see a center's typical lunch menu for toddlers and up.  One of the centers we were considering had a menu consisting of primarily pizza, hot dogs, cheeseburgers, etc.  There were very little fruits and vegetables on the menu.  One day even had Little Debbie cakes listed as the dessert.

Re: Another daycare question to consider

  • Yes I definitely looked at the menu items. The daycare we chose only had unhealthy food like that about once a week so either I will suck it up or send my kid in with something more nutrious.

I'm not opposed to my child eating something unhealthy like that once a week, but when 3/4 of the menu is made up of it, there is a problem.  One day had dill pickles listed as the vegetable.  Really, you can't open a can of green beans and heat them up?

This daycare also doesn't allow outside food except in cases of food allergy.

  • Our menu is actually pretty good and fairly healthy. Every now and then they will have oatmeal cookies for snacks.
  • There are state guidelines for daycare food -- someone should report them.

I have the state guidelines book.  The problem is most church daycares are exempt from being licensed and don't have to follow all the rules.  The good ones do, but this one obviously doesn't fall on the good list.

  • Your original post didn't say it was a church, sorry.  :)
  • While I wish averys daycare served less of what I consider kid food, they do have a fruit and veggie each day. I try to make up for it by not giving Avery fish stick and chicken nuggets very often at home.
  • When we were looking (before I decided to quit my job), I noticed a few places would show right on their menus that they also usually had chicken nuggets, bagel bites, fish sticks, hot dogs, and mac 'n cheese available if you were okay with it and had a picky kiddo.  I bet it is hard for them to feed the kids during those times that they don't want anything but spaghettios or a hot dog.  But it's always good to hear they're offering healthy options and the "kid stuff" is a secondary.
