Catholics: What are you giving up for Lent?

I'm going to try to give up swearing. I have a bad potty mouth.  I figure w/ DS starting to repeat things, I better get on it.

Re: Catholics: What are you giving up for Lent?

  • I'm not a practicing Catholic any longer but I still like to give something up.

I'm doing all sodas. I say this every year b/c I fail every year but this year I'm going to do it (I'm going to try really hard to do it)

  • Loading the player...
  • I'm going to go with an oldie but goodie, chocolate. This is really going to test my religion! LOL!!
  • PPV movies. OMG, OnDemand makes it so easy...and then I get my cable bill and I'm like "Why is this $50 mroe than it should be?"

  • Diet coke.  I'm going cold turkey starting today.  My "habit" had really gotten out of hand since I had the baby and it's gotten to the point that it was the only thing I was drinking all day.
  • Dh and I aren't drinking during the week Stick out tongue And we're also going to do prayers together in the evening before dd goes to bed.

  • I'm giving up the Gymbofriends BuySellTrade forum. Great deals, but I got out of control.

  • Candy.  I've been eating so much of it lately, it is going to be so hard.  I am hoping I get the same results I did when I gave up soda 8 years ago.  I haven't drank it since, except a sip now and then of someone's Mcdonald's coke (bc no soda is better than a mcdonald's coke).  I didnt try to give it up completely even after Lent, it kind of just happened and I love water so much now.  Here's hoping to be candy free, bc I am thinking that I am addicted to candy/sweets.

  • I"m PG, so *technically* I'm exempt....
  • Coffee - Although I sat down at my desk this morning and took a swig... then I remembered I was giving it up.  So I have a full mug of cold coffee just sitting here, staring at me.

I'll just go a day past Easter :)

I did this a few years ago and it was SO hard, but I made it.  I drink a ton of pop, like 3-4 24oz bottles everyday.   No one thought I'd make it.

I'm giving up chips and chocolate.  This applies to anything with the word chip or chocolate in it's name.  We'll see how it goes...

I honestly don't know if I could give up FB for Lent.  And I'm horrified by that fact.

  • I always give up soda for Lent and then something else. So this year it is soda and ice cream. Gonna be hard, ice cream is my comfort food.
  • I am giving up soda. Should be interesting to say the least!
  • sugar. Wish me luck.

and that said, I am off to take Ethan to an Ash Wednesday mass!

I'll pass you the water bottle.

  • Catholics aren't the only ones who have Lenten practices.  I'm progressive baptist and it's something our church encourages.  Rather than giving up something though, I'm adding more service / volunteering.  I'm reading to toddlers at a women's shelter this weekend.

  • I heard on the radio this morning a lady was giving up all sweets that start with "C"

cookies, cake, Coke, chocolate, caramel, cannoli, candy, there was a lot of stuff.

  • I am not Catholic but I always gave up chocolate for fun in college.  I would get so excited to eat a big piece of chocolate cake at midnight on that last day, lol

I should do chocolate because it has been an aversion this pregnancy. ;)

I heard on the radio this a.m. that the Vatican is suggesting people give up technologies for Lent, i.e. FB, texting, tv, etc. I'm not sure I can do that!

  • Although I'm not the girl that was mentioned in a previous post (because I'm not friends with that person)...I too gave up FB.  I decided yesterday that's what I was going to do...on my own.  I didn't know anyone else who was doing it, nor did I hear about the idea from other Catholics...  But, I was way out of control living in other people's lives and not my own.  Something needed to be done.  My last post was last night...  Today has been so much different for me.  I've gotten much more done...and I feel "lighter."
