Toddlers: 12 - 24 Months

if you started LO at DC after 1st birthday

How did they handle adjusting to the naptime thing?

We're trying to figure out how long DH can/will be the SAH. It's turning out much better than we thought and the set up works for us. DH might be getting some more consulting work which may create a need for a DC situation.

DS naps 1x daily from about 11-1230. He has never been a stellar sleeper and we still rock him to sleep (flame away- whatever. we do what we can to survive). Thinking of the nap thing at DC and not sure how that will work, especially if it's later in the day?

Re: if you started LO at DC after 1st birthday

  • We just started DS at an MDO this month (he's almost two).  He has stayed with my mom since I returned to work, and she rocked him to sleep quite often.  I was really nervous about the nap thing, so we talked to the MDO to find out their routine, and we started trying to implement that at home too.  We bought him a nap mat and just made a big deal out of what a big boy he was and how he was going to go to school and take a nap with his friends.  Surprisingly, it really wasn't a big deal to DS.  I've also been told that even at this age, peer pressure seems to work, and when they see their friends going down for a nap, they just follow along.

We didn't have to adjust the nap time at all, but maybe you can just slowly adjust your naptime once you know what it is at DC.  Good luck to you!

  • DD was in the infant room at her daycare/preschool (it's both combined). She ended at the end of June when she was almost a year. I'm a teacher and had her home with me for the summer. When she started back she was 1 and was in the 1 to 2's class. I was nervous about the nap thing but she slept great on her cot for 2 hours. DCP told me that they are busy all day that they stay awake. They were going outside at the time, coloring, painting all arts and crafts, story book time, circle time with songs and dancing etc. they then get pooped and will take a nice nap lol

  • D started DC at 13 months and goes 2 days a week.  For the most part, his schedule at daycare is completely different than his schedule at home, still.  At daycare, he naps from around noon-2.  He doesn't take a bottle before his nap, and for the most part he goes down pretty well (with just a little back rub).  At home, he usually naps from 9a-11/11:30a with no afternoon nap, and he MUST have a bottle before going down.

I'm guessing your LO's current nap time is right on schedule with what they will be doing - they will have to push it back some, but it won't be a huge adjustment, and he'll probably do fine.  I am constantly amazed at how well D does with naps at DC versus at home.

  • good advice! thanks :)

  • My DS started daycare on Tues and Fri at about 13-14 months. Somedays he naps well on the cot there, other days it's only 45 minutes. It stinks, but it does seem to be getting better. I think that once he starts going full time, and there is more consistency that we will have less issues.

At home, he naps about 12:30-2:30/3. Daycares schedule is 12:30-2:30.
