I have been having a hard time this last couple of weeks. My DS is facing ungoing medical problems, I am in school right now and my friend died in a car accident this weekend. On Thursday I had a panic attack at school and was taken to the hospital and given oxygen. On the way home tonight I started having one again because of the roads (I wasn't driving).
Anyway, to make a long story short, I was wondering if you all thought that anxiety medicine may help. My school has a counseling service for students and I thought of maybe calling them tomorrow. Do you think that anxiety medicine may help with panic attacks? I value your opinions and would appreciate any insight. I need help getting over/through all of this. Thank you!
Re: Having a difficult time
I would go in. They'll likely be able to help you with any coping strategies for your anxiety/actual counseling on top of a possible medication.
Side note - I went to Northern! Graduated from the culinary program four years ago.
Well first, I'm so sorry! You really are having a rough few weeks. ((hugs)) I really hope it gets better for you soon. And I am so sorry about your loss. And I hope your DS is on the mend soon!
And yes, I think anxiety meds can help you get over the "hump" here, if that's what you think you need. But talk to your doctor--she might be able to recommend a good therapist, too, who can help you sort out all your feelings. You're going through a lot and the panic attacks are your body's way of coping.
Definately get help. If you are a student and mother, you are doubly overwhelmed to begin with. Coupled with the extreme events going on in your life, you can't help but feel it.
Talk to you Dr and explain exactly what you are experiencing. Sometimes depression can mask as anxiety or vice versus. Some medications can do double duty as well.
As a therapist, I also recommend going to talk to someone in addition to medication. Meds can alleviate the symptoms but it is always best to talk to someone about the issues in your life.
Good luck!
I'm sorry you're going through this.
I used to get panic attacks all of the time through college and then they went away. Well after I had DS they were back thanks to all of the pressures of new motherhood. My midwives suggested I try something called rescue remedy. I'm not sure if they have it in the States but it worked amazing. It's a homeopathic anti-anxiety remedy you can probably get it at most natural health food stores.
Also it can't hurt to talk to someone about it. Whether or not you choose the medication route sometimes talking it through can help more than you know. Good luck.
Thank you ladies. I was thinking that I should probably go in and talk to someone. It is just hard for me to 'admit' that I can't handle everything on my own. I am usually the one people turn to when they need help, not vice versa.
Thank you for your input, and if anyone reads this again, please do me a favor and think of Becky and her family. She was only 20 years old and was a classmate of mine. I just can't believe she is gone and I want people to know that she was here and she was an amazing person.
