Stripping membranes- would your doc not tell you?

Just wondering if a doctor would strip your membranes and not tell you?

I don't have a problem with having them stripped, but I'm just thinking that has to be what he did.  Had an appointment this morning, I'm a fingertip dilated and 70-80% effaced.  I'm at 39w3d (ticker is a day off).  My last internal was 2 weeks ago (thanks to last weeks snow storm).  It didn't bother me at all.  This one he was up in there for longer and it HURT- he was really feeling around.  I've been having cramping since the appointment (no bleeding, though).

Re: Stripping membranes- would your doc not tell you?

  • generally i think they ask ahead of time.  at least mine did (both times i was stripped).

also she told me the first time she couldnt get a good strip b/c i was only a fingertip and usually she would use 2 fingers for it.  the first time it was done was INSANELY painful (everyone in the office got to hear me scream) so im pretty sure you would know if thats what was done but i could be wrong...?

  • With my DS I went in for my 41 week appt and I was in absolute agony.. She was doing an internal and I screamed because it hurt so much...she stripped them without telling but she was trying to keep me from having to be induced....it worked
  • My one internal, at 39w, was VERY painful, but the doc said it's just to be expected. She did NOT strip my membranes, and said they actually don't encourage the procedure.
  • With DD, my OB asked if I wanted him to strip my membranes so I think that's his policy.  When he did it, it felt like an "extra special" internal.  Really uncomfortable but not horrible and I have cramping the rest of the day.
  • I'm at the same exact progress as you.  My doc told me she will try and stretch me at my next appt if I hadn't dilated this week.  I'm taking Primrose Oil to help soften and dilate.  GL to you...
  • At my appointment last week my ob did strip my membranes and didn't ask. However she did tell me basically as she was doing it.

  • Mine did it and didn't tell me ahead of time.  I was pissed, because I didn't WANT my membranes stripped, and long story short, it caused me a very miserable labour.

Just curious as to how having your membranes stripped caused a miserable labor?  I don't think I've heard of that happening before.

Thank you ladies for your thoughts.  Still not sure whether or not he did it - you'd think he would've mentioned it.  I looked at my chart and couldn't read his writing if you paid me!  Between the cramps from that and my stomach just being a bit of a mess today, who knows.
