DS was just to heavy for me to carry around at about 6mo. So we got a conv. carseat. We put the infant in my DH car and he uses it since it will hold up to 32 lbs
We are going to get a convertible seat today. She was 7lbs 4oz at birth and at her 6 month was 19lbs and 95%. The Chicco goes up to 22lbs. That carrier probably weights 10lbs so I am looking forward to not carrying it around anymore.
Switched to a convertible in my car (the main family vehicle) at about 3.5 mos, DD was 15lbs and 27" (90% for weight and off the chart for height). Used the infant seat in the second vehicle until 6 mos when she was 29" and 19lbs (same percentiles).

DD is too heavy for it now, but we switched a long time ago. By the time she was 4 months old it was way too heavy to bother lifting it in and out of the car so we switched to the convertible then.
Still using it. DS was 28 1/4 inches tall and 21.5 lbs. at his nine-month appointment, and we have the Chicco KeyFit 30 (30 inches tall or 30 lbs. max, whichever comes first). So, I think we have another month maybe before we'll convert him. He's in the 50thish percentile for height and 65thish for weight.
We are still using our infant seats in one car and convertible in the other. Even though my girls are small (16 and 17lbs) it is too hard to lug two seats around now so we just leave the infant seats in the car.
