Babies: 9 - 12 Months

Ok, so I have a question about finger foods and stage 3 foods.

I keep seeing posts where these kiddos are close to my DD's age and they are eating pancakes, etc.  I can't even get DD to eat puffs (she hates them).  I haven't tried yogurt melts yet, we are picking some up this weekend.  However, I'm afraid to give her anything like my food, like pancakes and such, because I'm afraid she will choke because she only has 2 bottom teeth.  For those who's LO's eat stuff like that, how did you make the transition?

Also, she is on stage 2 foods- about a jar at a time.  When is a good time to move up to stage 3?

I feel like such a rookie, lol.

  • ds only has 2 teeth and he eats things like pancakes.  they don't chew food with their teeth until they have molars which isn't until around 2 years.  with ds, we followed his lead - he started getting really annoyed with me feeding him puree by spoon.  so we started with puffs which he happened to love and i let him eat some with his hands plus i feed him a bit of puree by spoon.  this morning he had some pancake (made the batter with puree banana in it) plus i feed him 1oz of puree prune.

  • My DD eats puffs, cheerios, little bites of avocado, banana and bread and she doesn't have any teeth. She is really good at gumming her food. Maybe try bite-sized pieces of her favorite fruits (steamed) and see if she likes those better than puffs?

You can probably start with finger foods now and not be too worried.  We started at around 8 months and I was freaked out.  But she did okay and now does awesome.  Just use really soft food - pancakes, bread, overcooked veggies.  She probably won't take to it right away, but she will get the hang of it (and she will love puffs!).  At this age they don't use their teeth to chew... they gum most things where their future molars will be.  DD just got her top front teeth in the last 2 weeks, but she doesn't use them yet.  I would feed her some puree first, then offer some finger food, especially from your plate.  Also, if you haven't tried baby mum-mum's yet, try them.  They are awesome for training them to chew. GL!

  • Ry doesn't have any teeth yet, but he loves to feed himself. I try to give him all kinds of stuff. He hasn't had any problems yet. Just give her a little bit of something and see how she does.
  • We went straight to table foods and DS has never choked. He does gag now and again but that is the way they prevent choking. However, he also wasn't used to sucking back purees so maybe that makes a difference.

  • We gave DD puffs and it took her about a week to "get it" and eat them. I just kept putting them on her tray. I haven't rushed with finger foods but she does pretty well with them and hasn't choked (occassionally gagged).

I started stage 3's once she took to finger foods and when she was finishing a stage 2 at each meal so I could offer her more.
