Babies: 3 - 6 Months

serious baby question: yellowish eye discharge

So DD has a cold and is really congested and I've also noticed some crusty, gunky yellowish eye discharge. Anyone else have this? We've got a call into the pedi.

  • Poor thing!  DS has had a cold before but never any discharge.  Hopefully the pedi can help her out!

  • I would put a call into the Pedi. They can give you eye drops that should clear it up in a day or two. (depending on how goopy)

yeah, her eyes don't look too red but my concern is conjunctivitis.

  • Yup.

    First time, clogged tear duct.

Second time with her cold.  Pedi said just to use a warm wet cloth to clean it when it got goopy.  He wasn't concerned.

Willis never had red eyes either. Just lots of goop. I also agree with the warm wet wash cloth.

  • DD had conjunctivitis a while ago and it wasn't just yellow goop - she would wake up with her eye crusted shut and the whites of her eyes were RED. It was awful.

Sounds like what I have heard called "allergy eye" that can accompany colds/severe congestion.

Def talk to the pedi though to be sure! And ditto the warm wash cloth rec.

  • Could be a blocked tear duct. Luke had this for the first 3 months or so. I would just use a warm cloth to wipe away. You can also use Collodial Silver which is anti bacterial and available from the health food store. They are drops.
  • Thanks ladies... Pedi said the same thing, just keep doing what we're doing by wiping it with a warm wash cloth and let him know if she wakes up with her eye crusted shut or it gets red. He thinks it is either the tear duct or a symptom of the cold.

I love that he calls right back and is so awesome no matter what our concern is.

  • With my LO they gave me eye drops and said it was from the cold. After treating it for 2 days it went away. However, the next week it came back with her having a runny nose too. Other than that she seemed fine.

My daycare lady had suggested I take her in  to the pedi because her son always had an ear infection when is eyes were goopy. Sure enough, she had a double ear infection!! The Pedi was surprised that DD didn't have a fever or fussiness too.

So my recommendation is take her in to get checked out. GL!
