So this is weird

My Grandpa died over a year ago. He was a genius and always into science and such. So he donated his body to the UofM. Well apparently they were done with his body but didn't tell my Aunt or Mom and two weeks ago UPS drops off a package at my Aunts house. It was my Grandpa's ashes! Isn't that weird that they didn't even tell her the ashes were being delivered? Or maybe this is common practice with U's? I haven no idea.

Re: So this is weird

  • That is a bit off, in my opinion. I mean, imagine your aunt getting the package, thinking "Oh, I hope I got something good!" and then this... sorry, some morbid humor, and sorry your grandpa passed away...

  • I don't know what they normally do, but I do think it's weird and disturbing. I couldn't imagine opening up a package and having it be DH's ashes w/o any prior warning.
  • That's odd - maybe there was something in the paperwork when he agreed to donate that said this would happen when they were done. It has to be in writing somewhere!
  • Yeah, that's very odd.  I would think some sort of warning would be appropriate.  I would have a hard time dealing with that without any warning.
  • I know someone who donated their body to science. The family was told that the body was kept for a year and the ashes would be mailed to them when the year was up. They should at least call the family, send a letter, something that would remind you that the year was up.

Maybe this was the same deal, and maybe nobody remembered that lol?

Getting a package like that unexpectedly could cause some real emotional issues for someone.

DH's bestfriend is a medstudent there and I think that it is common practice.

I think that they have a type of ceremony either before or after the donation with the families of the donor.
