Paci help...

I'm trying to ween my DD off her paci?  How did you do it?  And when is the right time?

I was never really concerned about her having a paci, until the other day at daycare.  After I came to pick her up with the another child's paci in her mouth. (grrr..yet another reason to get rid of it). I was told that she was the only baby in her class who still uses it.  It's amazing how little things can make you feel like such failure!

Re: Paci help...

  • She's only 8 months, so I wouldn't feel like a failure for that! My daughter is almost 17 months and still on one. We plan on weaning her at 18 months.

  • Our little girl is a year and still uses it.  I don't plan to take it from her until her 2nd birthday--we are going to do the pacifier fairy and send it away on a balloon.

  • i'm no help b/c DD still uses one at 26 months.  It did fall out of her mouth into the potty this morning, so i threw it away.  she was beyond devestated, but it's one way to get rid of them.
  • I agree with PP.  I wouldn't give it a second thought at 8 months.  We got rid of it at 1.  I just thought it's be easier to get rid of it before he could fight me too bad on it.  I guess I just saw my MIL have an extremely hard time with my SIL finally giving it up at over 3 so I wanted to get it done before.  Anyway, i just kind of took it away cold turkey.  He really only used it at night though anyway.  I would say something to daycare about making sure she's got her own, but wouldn't bother getting rid of it yet if you're not ready.
  • Um yeh I am no help either! DD #1 still has hers for bedtime and naps at 30 months. yes 30 months. DD#2 never liked em so i got lucky there.

  • Wow I am surprised to hear no other children in the class have them.  Is she in a baby room?  I think 8 months is too young to try to wean from paci.  Ava has basically weaned herself.  She really doesn't like it.  But I found her twice with somone elses paci at school.  I changed the paci type and labeled them very well and she still ended up with someone elses.  Lord knows how many times I wasn't around that she still had one.  That plus other reasons made me change daycares.  The new daycare was asking if she took a paci.

She is in a baby room with four other babies... and the oldest is 14 mon. But from what I was told they cant move into the other classroom until they are weened off their paci..because they are only allowed to have them at nap time.

  • We took our DD away at 2, I cut the tip handed it to her so she could figure out it didnt work anymore...then after about a week when she didnt ask for it anymore. We went to build a bear and she put her paci in a bear so now she has a "bobbie bear", and she will still tell you that its in there.
