Bikini Waxing

Okay, I'll admit it - I'm TOTALLY uninitiated.  I've never had a bikini wax before and I have NO IDEA what to ask for.  The place that I would get it done has "bikini wax," "high line bikini," and "Brazilian bikini."  What do each of those things mean?  Also, how long does this last for?  Also, how much growth does there need to be before I can get it done?

I can't believe I've made it this far in life without knowing the answers to these questions!

TIA!

Re: Bikini Waxing

  • I think bikini = they do the edges, Brazilian = they take it all. And there should be enough to where if you wanted to tweeze (YIKES) there would be enough to grab on to...

Well, that's what I had been saying for 32 year, too, but I feel like maybe it's time to see what the hype is all about :)

  • I got a Brazilian before my wedding (without being fully informed) and WOW!  It was an uncomfortable experience when I was thin...I can't imagine doing it pregnant!!!
  • Go Brazilian or go home!  I've been to wimpy to do it since getting pregnant because it's supposed to hurt a lot more.

And when they say all, they mean ALL.

  • Bikini is the bikini line and Brazilian is everything.  I think it needs to be at least 1/4" but you don't want it to be too long.  I've had a couple Brazilians and it wasn't that bad.  Take a pain reliever before you go and remember that it will probably be red and bumpy for a day or so afterwards.

But does Brazilian really mean EVERYTHING is gone?!  Not a single hair left?  Maybe this is TMI, but I haven't been totally hairless down there since pre-puberty!

  • man i have been thinking that maybe in 1 month i will be wanting to get this done. i am having trouble seeing down there already lol. trust my razor until i cant see where im putting it. thank god for female trimmers with safey guards hahaha

Get the shick silk effects razor. Its virtually impossible to get cut with it. I have been shaving with it since I was like 15. You don't have to look, just aim it at your bits and shave!

They'll leave some up top if you want, strip, triangle, etc.  Just let them know what you want before they start.  Everything includes between the butt cheeks too, just so you know.  That part sounds bad but it really doesn't hurt.

  • a high bikini is more than a bikini and less than a brazilian...I used to take advil before appt, but can't obviously do that anymore.  I have them done somewhat consistently and fortunately didn't notice a huge increase in the pain since pregnant, but here comes the "everyone is different" pregnancy advice!

I wouldn't sign yourself up for a bikini right now, I'd start with a high line bikini and see how that goes.  The down side to having this done while pregnant (or even shaving prob) is I'm getting more ingrown hairs, I think because of the increase friction from clothes:(

  • I waxed for over 10 years until about 3 mo pre-pg when I started getting laser hair removal.  That is on hiatus until after LO comes so I've gotten an electric razor in the meantime b/c waxing inhibits laser hair removal.

Anyway, hair needs to be 1/4" long AT LEAST for waxing or the wax can't "grab" it.  Most waxers will want it longer than that.  I always did brazilians & left a "run way" b/c I did it totally bald a few times I & felt like I looked like a little girl & it wigged me out.  It hurts, I am not going to lie.  But if you go to a highly recommended person then they are so quick it is literally over in 10 min max.  It feels very clean afterward & is no maintenance for weeks until you are ready for your next waxing.  It does itch when growing back though.

YES!!!!!  I started mine on my hands and knees....I'm just gonna leave it at that!

  • Before getting pregnant, I used to get regular brazillians.  Yes, it hurts, but it lasts a month (longer if you do it regulalrly - I was going for my appointment only once every 6 weeks) and it makes me feel more sexy.  I usually ask them to leave a 'landing strip' at the top since that part is just tooooo painful and also I didn't like the look of being completely bald.

Since being pregnant though, I can only get a regular bikini since it's way more sensitive down there.

I feel so hairy and gross, but really, I can't see it anymore with the belly anyway. lol

And for those who can shave? Well, great!  I've NEVER been able to shave down there because it gives me terrible razor burn and ingrown hairs no matter fancy razor I use...

  • I get a brazilian every 6 weeks. I do leave a little strip. It doesn't hurt anymore now than before I was pregnant.
  • I have gotten brazilian's from the time I got married until I got pregnant. I LOVE my esthetician. She is very professional and it only hurts when the wax is first pulled for about 5 seconds. Then it doesn't really hurt. Because all your hair is growing at different rates she does a free "clean-up" one week after the wax. Then it is pretty much bald for 2 weeks. She explained to me that waxing will damage hair follicles and some will never grow hair back again. Your hair also grows slower. This has been true for me. It is not nearly as thick as it used to be (tmi?). Before I stopped going, I was going about every 3 1/2 weeks. She told me a bikini will get you ready for a bikini, taking anything the bikini won't hide. A brazilian is front, back, and in between. You are in some pretty compromising positions!

The downfall I found to waxing is that the hair has to grow enough to be waxed again. With shaving, you can get it as soon as it shows up. This is especially bothersome if you wax armpits or legs. Also, if you do not properly exfoliate you WILL develop ingrown hairs. I know this is a bunch of info, but hope it helps!

  • Huh? My Brazilian wax didn't really hurt. To me it was no different than the pressure felt during an eyebrow wax.

Wish I would have known that before I got a Brazilian before my wedding. They really do get into every little nook and cranny, and freely poke around and spread your goodies when necessary.

  • I don't know about anyone else.. but waxing terrifies me. I don't know if I could do it.
  • i was terrified to get waxed during pregnancy, but bit the bullet and went last week. it honestly wasn't bad at all...no more uncomfortable than it usually is.

  • Thanks girlies - I'm totally going to try it.  Maybe I'll start with a bikini or high line bikini and work my way up from there.  Ease my way into it (and the Brazilian is more than twice the price of a bikini!!!  Talk about painful :))
  • I used to do them at my salon. A regular bikini wax will take off all of the hair that would show when you wear a regular bikini. A high line bikini wax will remove all the hair about an inch further in on each side. A brazillian removes all hair front and back (though I believe some places will only do the front if you request).

You want to have about 1/4" growth for a first-time wax - but not much more. Be sure to take a couple Tylenol before you go to have it done. If they do it properly, it should last 4 - 6 weeks before it needs repeated. Remember that it hurts worse the first time that it will at any of the subsequent waxes.

PM me if you have more specific questions.
