baby walkers

We were in Toys r Us the other day, and I noticed they have quite a few baby walkers.  I know these aren't AAP recommended, but someone is obviously still using them.  What about you?

I'm also interested to know if daycares use them.  If you feel like commenting on that below, please do.  I'm just curious-no flames from me.

Re: baby walkers

  • We don't have one, but I had one with Nate. He LOVED it. I would have no problems having one for Abby. We live in a single level home and I wouldn't leave her unsupervised in it.

  • Can I ask a question?  Why aren't they approved anymore? Is it a developmental thing or a safety thing or both?

We don't have one and won't get one just because we already have a jumperoo and I am going to get an excersaucer as well and well I just don't have room for any more baby equipment lol.

  • Haley had one and I used the same one (9 years later!) with Caleb.  The walker was Caleb's FAVORITE activity before he started walking on his own.  I don't know what I would have done without that thing!  It was so much fun for him and it gave me a little freedom to be able to cook, clean, etc.  We even used to take it out in the driveway and let him "walk" around outside.  He loved chasing the dog in it.  I'm pretty sure the reason they are no longer approved is b/c babies have fallen down stairs and stuff in them.  As with everything else baby related, it all comes down to good supervision and being diligent in watching after them.  Neither of my children ever got hurt in it, but they sure did have fun!

pretty much this. The reasons I found were dangers of falling down stairs, being higher up and therefore able to reach cords, tablecloths, hot liquids, etc. All of which I assume are common dangers of a walking child. I think the warnings probably stem from parents using the walker as a babysitter and not paying close attention to their babies in it.

Makes total sense...you have to use this logic with every piece of baby gear...it's all in supervision but like you said it probably stems from people using the equipment as baby sitters instead of watching them carefully.

  • I kinda feel the same as you guys. I remember my mom using a walker with my brothers, and she used one with me. I think as long as you are mindful it should be ok. Anything can be dangerous for baby when they are unsupervised.
  • We don't have one but they do at his playcare. It doesn't matter to me if he is in one or not. He loves to stand in his jumper though. We just don't have room in the house for one.

  • We used one and I loved it for when Robiinson started cruising/trying to walk.  I was able to clean/cook while he nascar-ed it around the kitchen.  I miss those days in a way, b/c I don't have anywhere to put him now!  lol
