Waist length hair on a five year old and help!

So I've been letting DD grow her hair long because she likes it.  But now I'm wondering if it's veering into creepy Crystal Gayle territory.  She now sits on it...

Just so you know where I'm coming from, the valedictorian on the class ahead of me in high school had ankle length long hair.  She now lives full time as an elf maiden and LARPs.  So, yeah....

How long is too long?

  • Sitting on it = too long.

  • mmm, you're getting close.  Maybe you can start explaining to her about locks of love and plant the idea then she can start growing it again without crossing over to the elven side of things.
  • IMHO middle of the back on a 5 year old is too long.
  • How long are you willing to spend washing/drying/maintaining it?  I cut Erin's about once a year, so the length varies from right below her shoulders to about mid back.  I wouldn't let her have it any longer until she's old enough to take care of it herself.
  • I think if she can sit on it, then it is too long.  At some point you go from pretty long hair to icky long.  Especially if she is an active kid- doesn't it get in the way???

I would think just above the waste would be fine as long as it is trimmed and kept neat.

  • I think any age the "bra strap" line is the longest I would go.  Obviously no bras on 5 year olds- but you get the idea.
  • IMO "too long" for a five year old is when it becomes difficult for her parents to wash and maintain.  I wouldn't worry too much about the weirdo-fication factor until she's a bit older.

But I like Brookie's "locks of love" idea.  She might really get a kick out of going to a fancy salon and getting a free cut and style while she helps out a bald kid.

  • Hmm...my hair was really, really long up until like 4th grade. When I say long I mean, like almost to my ankles!! I HATED it once I really started caring about my hair.  My mom swears up and down that it was so much easier when it was long, but I will never believe that.  She always fixed my hair in braided pig tails.  I will say that it did keep the hair out of my way, but it took her forever to actually braid my hair.

It is always in a braid or braids.   But I let her wear it down to school today and was surprised at how long it got.

We do have a cultural thing happening too, but I don't know if that matters.

  • i don't really like hair past mid back. i think it almost always looks ratty at that point, though there are clearly exceptions. i would say it's time for a cut.

have you considered donating her hair if it's that long? she could probably lose 10 inches and still have long hair! there's always locks of love, but i've heard bad things about them. i donated mine to pantene pro-v beautiful lengths which goes to make wigs for women's cancers.

  • i always had waist length hair (as a child, until about 12) but could never sit on it.  just trim it up a bit.

as for too long - basically if i see you out and you're an adult and you have stringy uneven hair below your butt, i automatically want to issue you a jean ankle length skirt and white keds.

  • I would say sitting on it is too long.  Does she want to keep it long?  She can have it cut to halfway down her back and still have long hair. Or if she wants a change she can donate it all.
  • the "hair fairy" would come and cut that off at this house LOL that is too long.

  • I'm in the same boat.  DD's hair is almost to her butt and she's only 3.  I think I'm going to cut it very very soon.
  • I say that waist lenght, if not a little longer is still ok. I had super long hair up until my oldest was born and then it just became too much for me to care for. I think that as long as you, the parent, don't mind caring for it, it's fine.

  • I think waist length is good, but it needs to be cut if she can sit on it.  To the pp who said "bra strap" was too long, I think that's a little ridiculous, but then again, I've always had long hair.

  • If you don't want to cut it, at the very minimum, I would at least cut it so she is no longer sitting on it.
  • I think hair past the waist on anyone isn't all that nice. I'd say mid-back is the longest I would let it go.
  • I had hair down to my belt most of the way through high school.  I think sitting on it is too long.

  • I loved having long hair as a kid--it varied from probably just past shoulder-length to waist-length. I think as long as it's not ratty looking, I would just trim it so it's no longer than waist-length. The locks of love idea is cool too!

  • I'm just thinking I'm lucky I have a boy so I don't have to worry about this!  If I had a girls, I would be all about a longer bob.  It just seems so much easier to care for and super cute plus you can still do little pigtails.

I like the idea of suggesting donating her hair.
