working moms: does your office EVER close for snow?

My office has closed twice in the past 27 years (as i was informed by a coworker).  I'm so jealous of people who actually get snowdays. I just have to take PTO when DD's daycare closes over a few flakes of snow.  Ugh.

Re: working moms: does your office EVER close for snow?

  • Nope, never.  We closed once for a flood last year, AFTER employees were on the way and one nearly died when her car was swept away.  If you ask me, it's a lawsuit waiting to happen.

We have a stupid call-in line that lets you know if work is closed, but I have no idea why since it never, ever is.

  • Nope never. I'm lucky to get Christmas off!

A couple years ago we lost power for 4 hours. We all just stood around b.s.ing the whole time. Had to call customers from our cell phones to let them know about the hold up. But we didn't close. Got right back to work when the power came back.

  • no and I'm a teacher, but since my students live where they go to school - we have school no matter what.

  • Seriously never.  I think they have closed one time ever, and it was during a blizzard in 1993.  I just keep looking at all the daycares that have been on the closing lists for the last three days and wonder what I am going to do when DS starts daycare in a couple weeks.

  • Our outstate offices have closed a couple of times because of bad weather this year, but our main office (in the metro area) NEVER closes.

  • Our office follows what the DC/Metro area Fed Gov't does. This has been all fine and dandy until this year. We've now lost 4.5 days between the snow in December and these storms!
  • Its a given, being in TX that it happens extremely rarely.  What gets me is that if there is a significant (for TX mind you) winter weather event, our office will close but not pay the employees.  Its not like we asked for it to snow.  I can understand if it was bad weather and our office stayed open and I decided to stay home anyway but if they make the decision to close, I full well think we should still get paid and not have to use our own PTO.  We can't work!  The office is closed!

This is a serious point of contention with me.

  • Yes they start staggering.  They let a group go at a time, ie: 12:00 group of people, 1:00 another group and so on.
  • No, but where we live we're a lot more prone to hurricanes than snow.  We never close for weather, so if we want time off we need to use our PTO.  I think it's ridiculous.
  • Maybe once every three years, but it's more likely they'll send us home early or ask us to arrive late.  I'm sure my DCP (in-home) hates snow days because all of the older kid are there all day instead of just from 4 to 5 p.m.  DD will have a blast with everyone today.
  • It's only been closed once in the last 10 years (where you get the call that says don't come in at all) but they have sent us home early due to weather.

We were sent home at 3 last Friday and 2 yesterday.  The people that work in customer service never get sent home early though.  I had that job once and I hated that part!

  • No. If we had 20 inches of snow, we'd still have to use personal or vacation time if we didn't want to get out on the roads.
  • I work for state government...they have actually closed down 1 time in 40+ years that I have heard. They won't do it much because they would have to pay us all for being off...
  • only if it is a state of emergency.

  • nope, never.  but for what we do we can easily work from home so that is what im doing today

  • we've had several times where the public school closes, but the university won't close and I still have to go to school and work (I'm a GTA).

Even when I lived/worked in Wyoming and we would frequently get FEET of snow and 60 mph wind and -25* actual temps it wouldn't close. I've learned to be hardy and bundle up!

  • They never close, but they tell us to use our judgement. We can always use our PTO if we can not come in or if we need to go home early. However, our work is always waiting for us when we return.

that's awful!  it's crazy that companies would rather get one more day of work in at the risk of their employees' welfare!
  • Only if we are a Level 3 Snow Emergency (which NEVER happens).
However-- Friday they let us leave early which shocked the crap out of us.?
  • If we had snow in Tampa, they might close the office, lol. We have closed the office due to hurricanes before, and we had to use PTO for that.

Our Duluth office has closed due to weather, but they had to use PTO.

So no real snow or hurricane days as we'd have to make up the time either way.

  • I work for a fairly small privately owned company who used to let employees work from home and not risk life and limb when bad weather hit. But since we have doubled in size since I have been here (5 years), management is a lot less tolerant to people working from home or closing the office due to weather.

  • It takes A LOT of snow for our office to close, basically we have to be snowed in.

  • I work in a hospital, but my daycare is part of the hospital, so they never close either.
  • I work for a university but when all the other schools and community colleges are closed we are open. I think our director let us go early one time but since I lived the closest at the time my boss made me stay till closing time while everyone else left (including her). Nice huh?
  • Once in the 5 years I've worked there and before I was a mom. It was a lot of snow - 3 feet maybe - and in the early morning/commute. The city asked businesses to keep people home. But most people worked from home. I fortunately have a lot of flexibility.
  • LOL!  Swedish-fish.  That is funny.  Nope we NEVER close!  insurance doesn't stop because of weather!!!  that was what I was told in a call center back in the day.  Did you call out today?  I will be leaving early to beat all the other crackheads.

  • I think it has closed 2-3 times in the past 5 years. Really the only time we close is if no one can get here. If there is at least on employee and one supervisor here, they stay open.

But we do not get penalized if we cannot make it due to the weather. We can either use our vacation time or not get paid.

  • They haven't closed ONCE in the over 4 years i've been working there-I had to take a vacation day to stay home for today's blizzard-awesome. Confused

  • Not in the time I have been here. All the branches near us will close and we'll be open.

They let us go early once just in time for me to drive home in the TX equivalent of a blizzard. It took me almost 4 hours to drive the 25 miles home and I was 7 months pregnant.

Yeah, me, too.  But it would still be nice to get a legitimate snow day every once in awhile!

Ugh, aren't we lucky??!!  I work from home on Wednesdays so I'm not in the office, but still working.  I talked to a friend in the office earlier and she said literally four people showed up on my entire floor.  And it's barely even snowing yet!
  • We're closed today. I've worked there almost 5 years and we've probably had 4 snow days in that time. I work in an insurance agency and most of our clients can contact their carrier (most are out of state) directly in the event of an emergency.

There have been times where there has been quite a bit of snow and the office has stayed open-it's get here when you can or use a vacay day if you can't make it in.

  • I work for a large state university. It's actually closed twice since I've worked here (in the last 9 years). But, prior to that, it had only closed one other time in the last 30 years or so. So, of course I'm at work today when there pretty much isn't a K-12 kid in school anywhere within this half of the state.
  • Yup...it was closed a couple of weeks ago due to a Blizzard.  Also, my boss is so great that if it is crappy out I can work from home.
  • I'm a teacher- today was our 1st snow day. We average two a year.

  • I work for a garbage company, we have only closed twice in the last 4 years that I have worked here.  That is due to having a Level 3 snow emergency which means no one can drive on the roads.  We're open today :-(  I wish for snow days!

  • I work in TV News so we're on, esp. if it snows a lot. I have a 4WD and my husband drove me once in 2 ft unplowed and it was scary! They've also sent people to pick me up before if I didn't think I'd make it, or if snow is predicted they will put me up in a hotel a block away from work.

We've had people cross country ski to work because roads were impassable. No matter what, we need to be there.?
