PCOS and ovulation

My doctor dx me with PCOS yet I have regular periods even with the IUD I have. Is there any way I can tell if I am ovulating? Can I do all the temperature taking and cervical mucous checking after I get out my IUD or is there no way to tell? He said because I have a few follicles in my ovary on ultrasound then I am PCOS. Yet I have always had regular periods.

We want to try to TTC this summer and my doctor said he would put me on clomid straight away when we get the IUD out.

So 1. can I tell on my own with tracking if I am ovulating

and 2. Does this sound odd to anyone else? This is not the first doctor to tell me I may have or do have PCOS due to follicles in ovaries.

It depends which IUD you have. If you have the Paragard (10 year copper IUD), then you can start with OPK (Ovulation Preditor Kits) now. If you have the Mirena (5 year IUD with progesterone), the progesterone in the IUD may mess up the OPK.

You don't have to go on clomid right away just because your MD suggested it. You can always try on your own for a while.

It's possible to have PCOS and still have periods from what I understand. And I agree with the pp that if you're using the copper IUD, you can start now. I too used the copper one and found I had very regular periods. As soon as it came out....none. Very disappointing. Obviously I'm not a doctor and you need to do what is right for you but if it were me, I'd wait to see if I regularly ovulated after getting the IUD removed and before trying clomid.

I have PCOS and almost always had a period. However I do not ovulate regularly.

It is possible to have PCOS and ovulate regularly. It's possible to not ovulate regularly, not have cysts on your ovaries and still have PCOS. There are a variety of factors to determine whether you have PCOS, and you can't take one isolated syptom and diagnose a syndrome - a syndrome by definition has an array of different syptoms. 20% of the general population has poly-cystic appearing ovaries, and certainly not all those women have PCOS. Two different REs have told me that although I have poly-cystic ovaries, I do not have PCOS b/c I don't have all the syptoms. I would get a second opinion.
