nursing bra/tank question

I am assuming it is best to wait until after your milk comes in to invest in nursing bras. Is this correct? Or should I buy for my usual size and hope for the best?

What about nursing tanks? I'd like to purchase some over the next few months as to spread out the cost. Or should I  wait to see what my boobs do?

Re: nursing bra/tank question

  • Lactation consultant said she wanted to see me 2 weeks before EDD to fit me for a nursing bra.  I would THINK the tank would be more forgiving.
  • Loading the player...
  • I bought two or three bras before E's arrival and then a few more of the style I preferred after he was here.  Most of the tanks I tried on were way too tight on my while pg to get a good idea of what I would like.  I got some at Babies R Us that weren't a big investment and then again, bought more of the ones I liked after he was here.  Personally I didn't wear the tanks until around 4ish weeks anyway because I needed the support of a bra 24/7.
  • I bought a tank in advance and then got fitted for bras later. I got one that was a sports bra style so it would be more forgiving.

  • I bought everything after I had DD and I'm so glad I did.  I was carrying milk jugs around for months and would have never fit into anything I bought prior to my milk coming in!  I had MIL make a Target run while I was recovering at the hospital and grab a few nursing tanks for me in L and XL.  I didn't buy a nursing bra for several months as the tanks provided enough support in the beginning without upset my very sensitive girls.  Good luck with shopping!
  • Thanks guys! I feel like such a newbie when it comes to this stuff. You'd think I was a first timer ;) When I had G my milk NEVER came in. So the couple of nursing bras I did buy got returned anyway :(

  • I bought Target nursing tanks in one size up than I would wear prior to being PG.  They worked out fine and I used those for the first few weeks.  Around 8 weeks PP I went and got fitted for nursing bras.

  • I got fitted at Nordie's. Let me RIGHT NOW recommend the most amazing bra: this one by Anita. It fits amazingly (and I'm on the bigger side), has a sweet little button you can slide side to side so you remember which side you last nursed on, and most importantly, it makes your boobs look GREAT. I was so tired of uniboob from the Target tanks (which I like as well) that I finally went into Nordie's in a huff and got properly sized (which is really important when using an underwire while nursing, so you can avoid blocked ducts) and then found this amazing bra. Love it.

    It's a little spendy, though.

  • I got some of those sleep bras at Target before my milk came in...since I was told not to wear a wire for the first couple weeks anyhow.  They are the MOST comfortable things in the world.  I still wear them sometimes aroudn the house...they're sort of like a sports bra but cris cross in the front so you can pull down to nurse.

Thanks, I've bookmarked for later use :) My due date IS my birthday afterall...and ever girl should have at least one comfy bra they love, regardless of cost right???

You can probably go to the Nurture Center and Kaiser has a great selection of Bravado products if you see the LC there- she'll likely be able to fit you as well.

I bought Target tanks and wore one home from the hospital. I lived in those bad boys but I am a lifetime member of the itty bitty tata club so even with milk I never needed more support than the tank had to offer. I am still a little bitter about that ; )

Ditto that bra completely! I wore the crap out of that thing!

I bought one tank before DD came (I bought it about a week before delivering) and once my milk came in it was way too small! But once my supply stabilized (I had overproduction issues) the tank fit great. I had a mini photoshoot by my Dad in the tank when Jenna was a week old. After seeing the initial photos (LCD screen) I ran and grabbed another top... it was just too revealing alone!

If you want to spread the investment out, go into the store, buy a gift card when you've got some 'extra cash' (whatever a new bra would cost). Do that a couple times before your bee arrives and you'll be all set to go shopping shortly after her arrival.

  • I am not a member of the itty bitty club.  I bought nursing bras when I outgrew my regular ones while PG, hoping I could use them after birth as they were not cheap (nothing is in my size).  They worked okay.  I also bought and still wear target nursing tanks (the full drop down version, not they style with the holes).  And then I shopped online a ton and tried on stuff at home and sent back loads that didn't fit.  I tried to get fitted at a maternity shop locally and that sort of worked but she only had one bra in my size.

I also found that my size fluctuated dramatically through the day so the only things that worked for months and months were really really stretchy almost not there bras.

  • I bought a few cheapies to have.  Then I ordered a bunch online, which turned out to be a disaster.  I ordered a bunch of sizes and fits and none felt right but I felt like I needed somthing, so I way overpaid.  So I went to Lullaby Lane and got fitted at around 3 weeks pp.  I got the Medlea ones that attached to the pump.  Watch out if your dog likes to chew - Cooper chewed the plastic bits off my nursing bras!  After about 6 months, I went to Nordstrom and got fitted.  Get a good bra if bras are important to you.  A good one did wonders for me!

I will be avoiding the Kaiser LCs at all costs...but I went to the Nurture Center today and wow, they changed the place up! And have a fitting room now. AND have the bra that alibee suggested! SCOREEEE.
