Moby Wrap - Everyone's Worried But Me

I recently ordered and received my Moby Wrap off Amazon and I absolutely love it! LO is only happy to sleep when he's on mommy, so it's helpful during the day to move about while still providing him with that need at the moment.

I'm looking forward to trying it out outside the house on short trips to the store or even to the park or something, but it seems like I have all these worriers around me. MIL is scared I will trip and "fall on the baby" at the mall with him and would rather I stick to pushing him in the pushchair, and DH doesn't think it's safe for me to have a little swing at the park because I "might slip and fall" as well.

Are they over-reacting?

Am I UNDER-reacting?

I just feel like it's no big deal and I'm perfectly capable of carrying my son safely with me in the wrap. I mean, I wouldn't purposely try to do something dangerous like bungee-jumping or sky-diving.

Re: Moby Wrap - Everyone's Worried But Me

  • I worried about myself at first, but after awhile that intense fear that I was going to fall on him went away. I think it just takes a little getting used to. I mean you aren't ice skating with him in it are you Stick out tongue

  • They are definantly over reacting. How often do you trip and fall? A baby is not going to be satisfied in a stroller as long as it would in a moby wrap. Anyone could trip and fall while holding the baby, so does that mean everyone that attemps to take a step while holding LO should be yelled at? The likelyhood of you falling on your baby is slim to none.
  • My mom freaked when I used the Moby this weekend with the babies, she is a spazz.  If used correctly, its totally safe and a big help! My babies love it, too.

  • Although I haven't gotten any comments like this about wearing LO, I didn't ALL the effing time from the in-laws while I was pregnant.  I was walking 3-4 miles a week during my last mouth and I'd hear about so-and-so being worried about me slipping and falling.  I never did though.  :-)

  • My first thought was that anyone could fall or slip or stumble while just holding a baby, so why isn't holding a baby at the park a problem? Also, when people fall, it's not often face first (that I've seen), so with a sling IF you were to fall (likely on your butt), then at least you wont also drop the baby. Anyway, I'm assuming you're fairly steady on your feet and always careful anyway when holding/wearing your baby, and they are definitely over-reacting. Slings are great!

  • I don't use it outside in the winter (like going from the car to the store) because I am afraid of slipping on ice or something, but I love using it IN the store.

Tell your MIL it doesn't matter what she thinks, it's YOUR baby, not her's.  Tell DH to relax.

  • I would rather trip and fall while wearing Lily over tripping and falling while carrying her any day. If you fall while wearing her, at least your hands are free to help break your fall, which lessens the chance of both you and LO getting seriously injured. And as far as swinging at the park, why the heck not? They are so tight and snug in the Moby, they're certainly not going anywhere! They are definitely overreacting... Ha, I can only imagine what they'd say if they saw me putting Lily up on my back!
  • I've never been worried about carrying DS in my Moby.  It never occurred to me that I might fall.  I honestly couldn't even tell you the last time I fell down.

DH asks all the time "he won't fall out right?" and I just assure him that he is okay.  I think he just doesn't understand how it works.  I have taken the time to show him how DS sits on the wrap in different positions, especially hug and lotus.  That seems to make him feel slightly better.

However, I think I would be more cautious and more likely to not wear him outside if I were in an area with ice.

  • DH worries about the sling, but DS is so happy in there that he is ok with it.  His fear is that the sling will just slip thru the rings.
  • I with you...I mean if you had the baby in an infant carrier (carseat type) on top of the shopping cart it could fall off, etc.  Plus baby is more "exposed" when in one of those...when you're wearing LO they are close and not out there for folks to breathe on, etc.

I think also that since the MOBY sort of mimics our pregnant shape we're already used to that center of gravity, having to balance, etc. and I don't feel like falling would be a huge concern.  Of course if it's rainy or slippery, etc. it's best to use extra caution, etc.

  • They're being silly. You could also slip and fall while holding the baby...are you never supposed to carry baby at all while you're walking? Rubbish.
  • Thanks, ladies. I was hoping I wasn't just missing something.

I should point out that my MIL is really sweet and we get on great...she just tends to worry a lot...and it rubs off sometimes on DH. It's likely just my gung-ho American nature that concerns them, hehe.
