Anyone Lactose Intolerant?

My doctor is trying to avoid surgery for my previous childbirth complication.  He is recommending that I stop all dairy and cut out all carbonated drinks and coffee.  This is a death sentence for me because I love cheese and am a diet coke addict.  Luckily, this year I have started to wean myself off the diet coke and coffee and pretty much just drink water.

It's the pizza that I'm going to miss:(  Options for pizza?  I saw the Amy's cheeseless pizza at ths store yesterday...

Also, what are some other foods to avoid that I'm not thinking of?

I know about milk, eggs, butter, cream, cheese, ice cream.

  • Hmmm, yogurt?  Why eggs, just curious?

If you're in Atlanta, Everybody's will make your pizza without cheese.  I hate cheese and they make the best cheeseless one.

  • Salad dressings also have milk or cream in them unless they are a vinaigrette.  My husband and I are lactose intolerant and we just use the lactaid supplement when we are going to have something cheesy.  You can find it in the medication aisle next to the tums.

It is very difficult to find lactose free cheese.  It does exist though.  I have found it under the name brand of Sorrento.  You can also find lactose free borden sliced cheese singles if you look hard enough.  You will probably have better luck finding lactose free cheeses at whole foods.  But I don't have one near me.  Often the lactose free items are with the natural/organic items in the grocery stores.  Also the lactaid brand milk is very good and just like regular milk.  If you can't have milk all together then I would recommend the vanilla soy milk by silk.  The plain one is just gross.  I am able to have hard cheeses without a problem because they contain very little lactose. Breyers makes a lactose free ice cream that is pretty good but it  only comes in vanilla.

  • So are eggs ok?  I guess I was thinking because they are technically in the dairy dept, they would contain lactose?

    TIA

Nope, lactose is a milk sugar.  Eggs are fine.

  • Don't forget milk chocolate. Cream based sauces/condiments as well.

  • DS is allergic to milk, not the same thing, but we still have to avoid lots of foods.  If you're really going to cut it all out you'll need to read packages since they hide milk in a lot of things.  Like almost all pre-made/frozen meals, soups, lots of baked goods, etc.

I would think this is obvious, but sour cream and cream cheese.

I actually just noticed the cheese we buy is lactose free.  It is the best cheese ever too.  Cabot Seriously Sharp Cheddar in the red and black plaid package.  Soooo sharp and cheesy = best grilled cheese ever.

  • I'm lactose intolerant and take daily lactose pills. I get them in bulk at Costco. Most chocolate should be avoided, which is the hardest for me. Anything dairy; cheese, yogurt, cream cheese, butter etc. Some things that contain milk that might surprise you - soups, sauces, breads, pizza dough (unless you make it homemade), and pasta. My dr told me some cheese and yogurt are ok because they don't have the same lactose.

I try to use olive oil instead of butter when cooking and do soy milk in my cereal.

So sorry about the dairy and caffeine restrictions. I know that's not going to be easy. Is it something he wants to be permanent?

  • Well-we are going to try it out for 2 weeks. The doctor has put me on 2 different meds which I will begin taking as soon as I flush my system of dairy and caffeine. If I see a significant change, than I think it will be permanent.

I've never really liked dairy (eggs, milk, ice cream, butter) and I've always had a reaction to anything with a lot of mayonaise.  I'm thinking all this time, maybe my body was trying to tell me something.  The doctor said I'm in the early stages of being lactose intolerant and this is why I'm having lots of issues with my childbirth tear...on a good note, it will be so nice not to have one of the two needed surgeries.  Plus this surgery was going to be the worst of the 2 so I'm all for doing what we can.

Chocolate will be hard, although I just need one piece of dark chocolate a day and I'm happy :)
