  When eggs are layed they have a protective coating on them that is removed with washing.  I always store the eggs dirty and wash them if need be right before I use them.  If they are just smudges most of the time I use them and do not worry about it unless they are not getting cooked thoroughly.

  I get farm fresh eggs and unless its a bit smudge of crap I don't wash them but I do make sure I wash my hands every time I handle the eggs

  We *always* washed ours.  Personally, I'm not a fan of storing chicken crap in my fridge.  Some of those hens were messy layers.

  Hmm, I'd never thought about this, but I'm guessing the eggs were washed before BIL & nephew give them to us.  I've never noticed dirt.

  according to mil, you should def wash them.  Just water is good enough, but a little soap is always good
