Our second surprise baby, due tomorrow, decided to make an appearance a little early, so she is already two weeks old!! It's crazy how fast the last two weeks have gone by, but I cannot imagine still being pregnant! Atalie Ryan (first name pronounced like Natalie without the N) was born on Monday, January 25th at 9:02 am, weighing 7 lb. 7 oz. and 18 inches long. She looks a little like Kennedy as a newborn, but she looks like her daddy, whereas Kennedy has always looked like me, so we joke that we have his and her babies. So far she is doing great - nursing and sleeping well, and she is pretty laid back most of the time. Kennedy is IN LOVE with her baby sister, although we are definitely dealing with some attention-sharing issues from time to time.
As is the case with a lot of second-time moms, my labor and delivery were way easier this time, so my recovery has been a thousand times easier as well. Anyway, here is the birth story. I had been having contractions pretty regularly for a couple eeks, but the night before she was born, they started getting closer together and stronger and I told DH to get ready, that I thought that was the night. I started timing contractions at about 7:30, and by 9:30 they had been 6-7 minutes apart for an hour so I called my OB (who happened to be on call - yay!!), and she told me to go on in to the hospital. We had already packed our bags, so we just had to get the last-minute stuff and have SIL come over to stay with Kennedy. We got to the hospital around 11:00, and I was 4 cm dilated and 80% effaced, but I didn't make any more progress over the next couple of hours. My dr. said she felt like if she sent me home, that we would just be back in a few hours, so she suggested that I just walk the halls for about an hour and see if anything happened. After that hour, I was 5 cm dilated and 90% effaced, so we were definitely staying at that point. We called my parents back and told them we were having a baby that night and they starteddriving down from Dallas. She broke my water at 2:30, and things started happening faster. My contractions started coming every 2-3 minutes and getting stronger. I got the epi around 5:00, and at 6:00, I was dilated 6 cm. My OB estimated that I would dilate a cm an hour after that, and the the baby would be born by noon. At 7:30, I told the nurse that I was feeling a lot of pressure with each contraction, and she said they would check me soon, but that it was probably just the baby getting into position. At 8:30, I called and said that I thought someone needed to check me right away because I was really feeling A LOT of pressure really low, and when they did, she said it was no wonder - I was fully dilated and she could see the head. My dr. was finishing a C-section then, so the nurse told me not to push, but just to hold on until she could get there. So after she literally came running into my room and scrubbed, she told me I could push whenever I was ready, and I started right away. I pushed one time and she was competely out, and DH was telling me that we had another baby girl and Kennedy had a little sister. It was so fast that it seemed surreal, especially in comparison to my two hours of pushing with Kennedy.
Atalie was Coombs positive, like Kennedy, so we dealt with the same jaundice issues this time around also, but it was nice having been there before so I didn't freak out too much. We left the hospital Wednesday, but we had to have her on a phototherapy blanket at home until Thursday afternoon. But since then, we have all been good. My mom was here for a week to help with everything, which was huge, especially with Kennedy, and we have been on our own for a week now. So there you have it, and here are a few pics...
