Toddlers: 12 - 24 Months

Starting whole milk after BF for a year

Sigh. This is so hard.  My son is addicted to nursing.  He loves it.  He HATED the sippy of whole milk I gave him.  He kept pushing it away.  I really was wanting to be done BF at a year so I could have my body back before I started TTC again. Oh well, if he won't drink it, I can't force him.  He won't even take bottles of formula.  Any tricks or ideas?

  • Have you combined BM with milk?

Also, you can TTC and nurse at the same time. Have you read Taking Charge of Your Fertility?

  • My DD is 16 months.  We BFed until 15 months.  We tried every suggestion for drinking milk - gradual, different cups, different spouts, different settings, warm, cold, with chocolate, watered down, and probably some more.

    Then we gave up.

She eats cheese throughout the day and yogurt each night before her bath.

We still offer milk regularly.  Now she will dip toast into milk and will eat cheerios in milk.

I finally stopped stressing about her not drinking the "recommended amounts" (or any!) and just focused on balanced nutrition from other sources.  She is growing great and just doesn't drink milk.  No biggie.  It isn't the law that your DC has to drink milk.  There are ways to work around this, get what your child needs, and not stress about it.

GL! (and I felt your pain)

  • They usually don't like whole milk the first few tries, but they get past that.  The PP brought up a good point of mixing whole milk with BM.  Just slowing decrease the BM until it's just whole milk.

I didn't think DD would ever drink whole milk for me, but she started doing it just fine all of a sudden.  We had to warm DS's whole milk for the first few weeks.  You might try that too.

  • Henry nursed for 14 months before we offered milk and it took him at least 2 months to start enjoying milk. He would take it once in awhile, but not all the time. Now he loves it! Good luck. Dont worry, it might take awhile, but your LO will probably learn to enjoy milk.
