3rd Trimester

38 week appt. -- No Progress WWYD?

I'm currently 37w6d and am showing no progress (which I understand is normal for lots of folks) and the LO is still very high.  At my 36w growth scan, LO was measuring in the 95th percentile on weight at 7lbs. 9oz. and her head measurement was off of the charts.

Knowing that these things are not 100% accurate, we have just been taking a wait and see approach.  My doctor has ordered another growth scan for this Friday and put me on the schedule for an induction on February 16.  She said a number of times that we can cancel the induction, and if the scan comes back that the growth rate is slowing down, she would recommend putting it off another week at least.

She seemed to be talking more about the size of LO's head than weight as the issue.

She mentioned the term "soft induction," which means to her that they induce, watch progress very closely, and do not make you labor for days waiting to dialate and for LO to drop.

Does this all sound reasonable?  Would you wait to be induced until your due date no matter what the results of the growth scan and LO's head?

  • wait- I am in the same boat.  Things can change.

  • I would definitely wait.  Ultrasounds are not always accurate, and I think they induce WAY too many babies because the ultrasound said they were big.  BFF was induced early because her baby was "over 9 pounds", but he was born at less than 7.

This is precisely my concern.  Plus, I figure if LO isn't going to drop and fit through my pelvis due to size at 39 weeks, she won't drop and fit at 40 weeks.  In both cases, the result will probably be the same -- I'll need a c-section.  I guess the advantage of inducing a little earlier is that I might have a better chance at a vaginal birth, but that isn't worth it if LO isn't fully baked and ready to make her debut.
