QOTD: What are the important points that you learned from any classes you have taken that you would like to share?
I learned a lot from my breastfeeding class, which I won't rehash here since 50% of the people replying got quite up in arms about it, haha (got lots of PMs and replies in support though!). We haven't taken our infant CPR class yet, though that will be informative to both DH and I. As for the 9 hour birthing class - DH took a LOT out of that class. He tells me all the time that he feels much more prepared and much less nervous since taking that class, so I recommend it to anyone if only to benefit their DHs!
We took the CPR class, the childbirth class, and I took the BF class. I think the video in the BF class was the most helpful for me (sounds strange I know). It's different to see how the baby latches then to read about it - sounded really complicated when I read it in the books but doesn't seem so complicated in practice.
I think the childbirth class helped DH the most - just all of it really. He'll ask me questions every now and then if certain things are going on that he learned in class.
I'm really glad we took the CPR class. We got a copy of the video we saw there and a doll to practice with so we can show others how to do it as well.
QOTD: We didn't take classes either. Could not find any offered at a decent time of day at a decent location...
QOTD: Well, we have only had 1class so far. We have BFing tonight and our 2nd child birth class tomorrow.
It was interesting to hear about what my body does and what the baby does during the stages of labor. And also that if I tell DH that I hate him during labor, I really don't mean it!
I've tried to check in several times since I started "bumping" about 6 months ago... Am I doing something wrong?

Let's see. Things I learned that I didn't know before attending class:
- If you have an epidural, you pretty much have to have a catheter
- If you have an epidural you can't go in a tub, or do much of anything else
- I will be spending 12-16 hours per day taking care of LO (I have a chart that I was given that breaks down how you spend time)
- Babies cannot be given CPR like regular adults- there is a special way to do it
- You shouldn't pump until at least one month after birth because it can affect your supply and cause engorgement
- Having the wrong latch when breastfeeding is one of the main reasons people quit - it causes a lot of pain and discomfort
That's all I can think of now, I honestly can say attending the breastfeeding class was the best decision I made regarding classes. Totally worth it.
We learned tons of interesting stuff at our childbirth class!
* DH got to learn how to catch baby, just in case our doctor allows him to
* We watched a zillion videos, which has made both of us more comfortable with the idea of labouring with a bunch of people in the room
* We learned the legal obligations of our doc vs actual safety of patients (dumb rules, such as- the state of Ohio requires a baby to be born 24 hours after water breaks, even if that means C sec, while the state of California allows up to 72 hours after water breaks..)
* BF class was wonderful- learned different techniques such as leaning all the way back and placing the baby on top of you to have LO find its way to the nipple by itself.
* Learned about all the possible interventions, and hazards and benefits of each, in case the natural birth we have planned falls through. I feel so much more prepared now!
on a side note we go today for our growth ultrasound. Baby was measuring three weeks ahead last time the doctor checked so we are going to be making a decision on how far we will go before we induce today. With DS they weren't willing tort me vet past 37 weeks because of size ( he delivered at 35.5 and was 7 lbs). So hopefully this baby will be as proactive as his brother becuase I really hate the thought of having to be induced!! Will update after the appointment this afternoon to let you know what is determined but hopefully either my body is making some progress towards labor or my baby isn't as big as they think... Though the size doesn't look good since DS measured exactly the same so he's probably a big baby!!
What a busy but great weekend. We had our last shower this weekend. It went great. We got lots of stuff and gift cards. We then took all our cards and our registry coupon and got the rest of our stuff. We had fun putting together the pack and play and putting away the clothes. Almost ready, now I need to pack my bag.
QOTD: What are the important points that you learned from any classes you have taken that you would like to share?
The only things I really took from the classes was the hosiptal's policies. I have read a lot of books and they seem to tell me the same stuff they did in the powerpoints.
QOTD: I liked most about the class was the nurse knew a lot about everyone in the classes doctors regarding when and why they might do a c-section, at what point you can receive an epidural, when you should come to the hospital (contractions 5 minutes apart, water breaks or bleeding), and how they do their circumcisions. I never knew there were different ways and each way requires a different type of care afterwards.
I also really liked that it is hospital practice to give the husband or coach and mother alone time with the baby for the first hour after birth, called Kangaroo care. It is posted in the family waiting area and being a common practice it somehow put me at ease a little more because this is what I really wanted but didn't know how to break it to my family. It is time for the baby to relax from everything that has just happened and bond with the mother and father or coach.
Haven't taken the breatfeeding or infant CPR class yet but hope we can before LO gets here!

1) how protein is SOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO important in your diet. I have to start eating protein 1st thing in AM just to get in enough protein...to meet the daily recommended amount. It is not an easy task to do and if people think they are getting enough protein I dare them to keep track of their intake. That is what my Bradley Instructor is having us do and it really opened my eyes
2) Protein actually HELPS keep swelling, high BP and pre-e DOWN! It can be reversed with diet if they catch it early enough. I can't believe how many problems and complaints women wouldn't have if they would eat better...throughout their pregnancy. Also, the whole salt intake is increasing swelling is more of a myth now....water helps swelling and so does protein.....not reducing your salt intake and that is it.
3)Protein also is the one of the major things that grow a baby and help with brain development. Brain development continues well into the 8th month and so your protein diet is absolutely important through out your pregnancy and up until the end.

QOTD: The classes we went to were more or less a continuation of high school Sex Ed classes. Instead of talking about sex, she was just talking about labor and delivery and how much it hurts. The very, very end of the class was when she got to the laboring positions and things to do to help ease the pain which are things most women know anyway just from seeing movies.

QOTD: We've only taken 2 classes so far & I really haven't been taught new. The 1st class was a baby care class & the 2nd was breastfeeding, but I had already done so much research before going that I already knew a lot of it. I've been on modified bedrest for a couple of months and we've only taken a hypnobirthing class...I really didn't take much from it, lol!
We are taking an infant CPR class and Caring for you and your Baby class this week. Hopefully I take something from that.
I can't believe how quickly my due date is approaching! Sometimes I feel like I just found out that we were actually pregnant. Being on modified bedrest I haven't been able to prepare the way I want to and I'm starting to stress out about not being ready for my precious little boy. I have pre-e and my BP has been higher for the last 4 days. I'm scared that he might have to come within the next week or so and I'm trying not to stress out about it and make my BP worse! The nursery is finally coming together, but my house is a disaster and it's actually dirty. My Mom said she would come to help, so I'm hoping she actually does!

We haven't taken any classes. DH and I are debating taking the prepared childbirth class again, however we know what works for me and are planning on going with that method. I told DH I wish I could just go to the class for the pain mgmt techniques instead of sitting through all the labor stages and birth stuff since I remember the majority of it.

i too am guilty of not taking any classes. i have been to one, but it was about nutrition. stuff i already knew.
with both mine and my guys busy work schedule, its hard to make time for classes. ill be taking my leave soon. hopefully then ill get myself into some classes. especially a breastfeeding one.
We've gotten through 4 of our 5 childbirth classes. In all honestly I don't really think that I've learned much from them. I'm hoping that the breastfeeding class we signed up for is better.

QOTD: What are the important points that you learned from any classes you have taken that you would like to share?
There was a lot of information that I soaked in during our childbirth class. My husband said after session 1 that he had learned a lot! I thought that was too funny.
Anyway by our last class, session 3, we were feeling like pros when the teacher gave some scenarios. The first question was: You wake up in the middle of the night to go to the bathroom and realize your mucous plug has just come out. Do you a) call 911, b) call your dr, or c) do nothing-go back to bed...? My husband and I were both about to say "b" when someone else called out "C!" And the teacher says "Correct!" DH and I just looked at eachother and laughed. Some students we were!
So....what have I learned? Don't call the dr. when my mucous plug comes out! LOL!!!!
