Baby mattress help (do I need to spend a lot of $?)

I am considering purchasing the Graco Lauren crib that is on sale at Target and includes a free mattress. However, the mattress is bottom of the line and I am wondering if it is important to spend more $ on something as important as a mattress. The reviews seem ok and we are on a really tight budget for our baby's nursery. Would you use this mattress for your LO?

Thanks!

Without being able to feel the firmness in person, I wouldn't. We noticed a big difference between the cheaper and mid-range mattresses and ended up going with the LA Baby Mattress from Costco for $130. It's a good price for a very firm mattress:

I've heard really good things about Sealy crib mattresses. They are around $75 at walmart.com and have good reviews. I think this is the mattress we are going with. HTH.

ETA: Oops forgot to answer your question, I personally wouldn't use that mattress. There is one at my local Target and its not a very nice mattress. So if you were going to buy that crib anyway, I would get that crib and sell the mattress on craigslist or ebay.

Honestly, I don't know that I'd purchase it without having the opportunity to feel it ... honestly, what you're looking for whether foam or coil is a firm mattress ... that's the most important factor in selecting a mattress .. you don't need to spend a lot but you do need to make sure that the mattress is firm.

We went to the store today and purchased the crib and mattress.  In the store you CAN feel the mattress and it is firm.  All of the reviews were positive as long as it fit the size of the crib you were using.  It is actually the model down from the one originally registered for and not THAT much cheaper.  But free is A LOT less expensive.

I hear the foam mattresses are best.  We are either going with a Cogate or Moonlight Slumber mattress.
