Feeling sick after glucose test

I had my glucose test done today. I drank the orange drink at 10- the one I had wasn't carbonated and didn't taste as bad as I expected but I feel really sick to my stomach since about 10:30. I am having like hot/cold flashes and goosebumps and my stomach is really upset and I feel nauseaus.

I have an appointment later today but would you call your OB and mention it to them? Has anyone else felt really sick to their stomach after drinking that? I'm at work, but I feel like going home and just laying down and sleeping it off :-(

  • No, I got a bit queezy and icky feeling after the orange drink. It's all the sugar. Even if you don't feel like it, eat something non-sugary and drink some water.

  • i got this reaction when I did the 3 hr test... came to work and felt just awful. went home and slept for 3 hours.

i told my doctor at the next appt, but didn't call before that.

  • That's normal due to the high sugar content-did you fast? I puked up the drink in the parking lot after we left. Eat some carbs and hopefully you will feel better soon!
  • I had mine today also.  My stomach was gurgling like crazy and now I have a little headache.  Mine is probably related to having a sugar high that early in the morning.  I'm not really a sugar person usually.

  • You can mention that to your OB, but I'm pretty sure it's totally normal.  I think the pancreas produces a lot of insulin in response to the glucose, which results in dizziness, nausea, sometimes anxiety, etc.  It should get better as your body adjusts to the glucose throughout the afternoon.

    Hope you feel better!

  • I would say eat something........I know I had breakfast/lunch after getting it done and I was fine after that.  Not so sure how I'm going to feel after the 3 hour test though....yikes!
  • I felt really gross after drinking the orange drink. I ate a few crackers and drank some water and I felt fine after about 20 minutes or so.

    Hope you feel better!

  • Normal. I am hypoglycemic and that is exactly how I feel if I eat too much sugar (esp on an empty stomach). My blood glucose was only 106 at my one hour draw. The nurse said that that was amazing and most women didn't get a reading that low. Duh my blood sugar dropped way lower than that later in the day. Try eating cheese or meat to stablized your sugar.

I didn't fast- I asked at my last appointment and they said I could eat something light and not over loaded with sugar. I had a big bowl of cheerios with a banana for breakfast and some applesauce when I got to work. Other than that my stomach didn't have much in it so I was thinking that was part of why I feel sick. I have an employee bbq I'm going to in a few min that is only once a year so I hope getting outside in the fresh air and getting some food in me will help.

I'm glad to know others felt kinda sick and it's not just me.

  • You need to eat something, because the drink makes your blood sugar spike, and then it bottoms out really fast.  Eat a good lunch to balance out your blood sugar, and you'll feel better in no time.

I had my glucose test this morning too - drank the stuff at at 8:30, blood work at 9:30 and I was practically running out of the office to get a bite to eat when I was finished.  I feel a ton better!
