Pacifiers?

Which type of pacifier do you plan on using? The round pacifiers or the Orthodontic Pacifiers? My SIL swears by the round ones and sent me a couple in a care package she sent me a couple weeks ago but I am used to seeing people use the orthodontic ones.

Second time mommies what worked best for you?

Re: Pacifiers?

  • You won't get to decide.  Your child will.

DD hated the NUKs and the round ones (I forget what those are called).  The only one she ever took (and still uses) is a Mam.

  • I have the round ones that my SIL sent and I bought a two pack of the avent orthodontic ones so I figure I could give both of them a try
  • Yea the choice isn't really yours, Your little one will let you know which they prefer. My DS loved the NUK'S. I started out trying the Avent ones but he liked the NUK's better.

  • We got all sorts, but DD loved the green soothie ones. We even got her the soothie bottles because she liked the pacis so much, it made the transition from breastfeeding to bottle feeding a breeze.

  • DD1 hated the round ones.  She only used NUK, and it took us until she was 3 to get her to give up her beloved "noo-noo".  I won't be using pacis at all this time until we have a good nursing habit established.  The only nipple DD2 will get is mine in the beginning.
  • I'm really hoping that my baby doesn't end up using the round ones- we may not give him the option- they just look ridiculous.  My cousin uses them with her little one and every picture she takes, you can't even see her LO's face because of that darn paci!!  ;-)

  • DD only used the GumDrop one she got from the hospital, she only used it until about 7 months and I never had need to buy another. I did have an identical backup, just in case.
  • Don't go crazy buying pacifiers!   Most babies really do prefer one over the other.  We had tons and tons of pacifiers because my friend used them for centerpieces at my shower, but my son would only take the Soothies (the weird looking round ones).  So, now we have bags full of brand new pacifiers!  Maybe the new baby will like some of them.  :)
  • I think it kind of depends on what your baby prefers.  I'm a speech pathologist and I work with a lot of babies on developing effective sucking skills (nutritive and non-nutritive), and I personally do not like the Nuk pacifiers.  I think the shape of the pacifier encourages a lingual thrust-type patterning of sucking versus a more mature, true sucking pattern.  Of course, the lingual thrust (suckle) pattern is more typical when the baby is a newborn, but they should move away from it eventually (so better not to encourage it for an extended period of time with the Nuk paci).

If you want a orthodontic pacifier, I would use a Mam.  Otherwise, I like Soothies a lot as well as Playtex.  A co-worker of mine really likes the Gerber pacis because they are more flexible beyond the actual "nipple."

  • I never gave my son a pacifier and won't give one to this baby.  I never had problems with my son sucking on anything.  It's just my personal choice.
