3rd Trimester

Childbirth and breastfeeding classes?

When did you take them?

I just realized I should probably be looking into when classes start.

Re: Childbirth and breastfeeding classes?

  • I live in a small town and they only have them every like 3 or 4 months here at our hospital so I took mine in November, because the next one is Feb 13 and I'm due the 14th. Thats all I took though, I didnt take any breastfeeding classes because...I'm lazy. Big Smile

  • At my 28 week appointment I remember my doc telling me that it was time to start signing up for classes. I never did and am not taking any LoL

    Baby #4- coming in May

  • You definately still have time to look into them, we waited until last minute to take ours and our last class is next week.

  • I think they want you to be done w/ them at least a month before your due date, so it'll depend on if you do it all in one day or a series of classes.  We did a 4 session class that was 2 hours each- I liked doing it that way, I couldn't sit in a class for 8 hours.
  • I think I was about 30 weeks when we took ours... Really, my own thoughts on the class were that it was a waste of time and money. Hubby and I wanted to go, it's our first child and I thought it'd be a nice "bonding" for us.. We bonded..Over how pointless the class was.

Not to mention half to almost all the stuff we learned is now moot because we're having a c-sec.  The only thing I took from the class which I found interesting was the 1-5-1 rule.  That's when you go to hospital, when labor's real. Was always curious "what the number's were" When your contracting for one min, five mins apart and that lasts one hour.. It's real labor

  • I took the breastfeeding class around 35 weeks I think. I skipped the childbirth classes though. After meeting the childbirth educator during the L&D tour I wish I would have taken them just because the woman teaching them is hilarious.
  • I'm 34 weeks and starting the first of a 5-week series of birthing classes on Wednesday. I'm taking a one time 2-hour breastfeeding class when I'm 36 weeks.
  • I am taking the breastfeeding class on Wed (31 weeks) and Childbirth class when I am 36 weeks.  Those were the best times that they were offered. I am not sure when exactly you're recommended to go.

  • I'll be done with my classes about 4 weeks before I'm due. That's what the hospital said to do.

  • We opted to do a weekend-intensive class instead of a couple hours a week for six weeks. The class was all day today and all day tomorrow.  Luckily we can move around during class and stretch and lay on the floor!

I'm 34 weeks and there are two women in my class that are 38 weeks.  Everyone else seems to be between 30 and 35 or so.  One of the women who is 38 weeks said that she took a class back in September, but forgot everything so signed up for this one :)

  • When I was pg with DS, we took a 6wk childbirth prep course, a baby care course (mostly for DH b/c he hadn't ever been around babies pre-DS), a labor massage course and a BF course.

Some of the prep course was boring, but overall we both took some really good things away from it that, if nothing else, helped us relax more through the process when I was in labor.

The baby care course was pretty rudimentary for me b/c I've been around babies my whole life, but DH learned some things that made him more comfortable handling DS early on. Really, that was what I had hoped to gain from it anyway.

I loved the labor massage course b/c it was 2hrs of DH massaging me and learning new techniques, but honestly, it was kind of a waste for me other than that b/c I didn't want to be massaged while I was in labor.  Other than the occasional love pat or brief hand-holding, I didn't really even want to be touched.  But hey...I did get 2hrs of massage out of it at a point when I really did need it, and DH did learn some new tricks that I still take advantage of from time to time.  Wink

The BF course was probably the course that I got the most valuable information from.  It really helped me figure out what to do and how to do it.  The hospital did have an LC on staff, but there were so many babies born about the same time as DS that I didn't get to see her until it was almost time for us to be dismissed and after DS' circumcision.  (Which, by the way, is not a good time for BF'ing b/c they just want to sleep.)  If it hadn't been for that class, we would have had a really rough start to our BF relationship.

  • I just started taking them this weekend....I have 2 childbirth classes, one breastfeeding class, and one baby care basics class. They are about every other weekend....
  • My OB recommended to have the childbirth class done by the time we are 34 weeks. We are opting for the 8 hour, one day class. This is mostly because it's winter and the hospital is 40 minutes away, and I'd rather drive into Rochester once for the day with my hubby, than meet him there from 7-9pm once a week for 4 weeks in a row! We did have to register about a month ago to get into the class we are taking Feb. 27th. The classes before that were already booked, so you should at least register soon!

I wanted to take a BF class, but $$ is tight right now, and I know that the hospital provides good lactation consulting services, so I won't be doing that one.

  • We did ours early (20 weeks) because they happened to offer a two week option instead of the four weeks worth of classes, and because we're in Iowa we didn't want to deal with the February weather/roads.
  • We did our childbirth class at 31 weeks, and our BF class is this week (34 weeks)
