Babies: 0 - 3 Months

Any suggestions for intro. to bottle?

He literally goes from happy and smiling to pissed off hulk baby at the SIGHT of the bottle. To say he refuses it is an understatement, he despises it and now that he's in daycare part-time we really need to figure it out. He only gets down an ounce or two during the day when he's there, we have tried different bottle, different nipples, I even let him try formula to see if he'd take it, no such luck...HELP!

Re: Any suggestions for intro. to bottle?

  • My DS refused a bottle.  Never took one.  I think he got a total of an ounce down between the time we introduced it at four weeks till he was a year old.  I can tell you from what I've heard in my LLL meetings though.  Some babies just won't take one, or only take a little bit from it, and then will nurse all evening and much of the night.  Formula tastes much worse so I'm not surprised he refused that.  Other babies just took time.  I'm a SAHM so I can't give much advice.

  • Well, full-time will be out of the question for a while then! I will have to let him gorge himself when I am home on the 2 days a week I work, poor guy!Sad
  • Sorry I wasn't more helpful.  I was only passing on what I've heard from moms in my group.

  • DD  won't take it unless it's super warm.  Maybe let it heat a bit longer.  Thats all I got :o)  GL

  • DS likes his bottle warm as well, maybe that will help...have you tried the Playtex dropins nipples? They're much bigger than the regular nipples, and my DS still has a BF latch on his bottles...maybe that will help?
  • We went through the breastflow, playtex drop in, playtex ventair, medela, dr. browns, and another one I cant think of the name... Finally LO liked Tommee Tippee bottles. Good luck.

  • I've heard that some just don't like bottles, and some moms were successful putting the EBM or formula into a sippy cup and skipping the bottle all together. I'm just not sure at what age that occurred. Maybe ask your pedi?
