LO drinking from a straw vs. sippy pros? cons?

Hannah can drink from a cup with a straw much better than a sippy cup.  When I give her the sippy she understands how to get the milk out but can't hold the cup at the right angle.  She likes drinking from a straw much better because she can do it herself.

The straw is obviously more messy and so when we're out in public I always bring a sippy or I hold the cup w/ the straw for her.

Are there developmental downsides to allowing her to drink from the straw insetad of the sippy?  I assume she'll figure out the sippy later on when she's a bit older.

  • I'm not really sure about this, but I would think that the straw would be more more developmentally advanced than a sippy cup.  I think about 4 year olds, for example.  I think the goal would be for them to be drinking from a straw cup rather than a sippy!  In my mind, Hannah is super advanced!  :)

  • I think it is fine!  you are way ahead of us.  DS is over 1 and still can't use a straw - can't stuck and can't use a sippy cup well.  i saw go with the straw/cup if she doesn't dump it over like my child does.
  • I think that is great!  Developmentally kids usually go from sippy to straw.  My pedi isn't a fan of the sippy cup at all and prefers DS to drink from a straw.

As far as mess goes, we started DS on these

they aren't as easy as a regular straw, but they are spill proof.

  • may I suggest you try something...

just give her a little glass that her hands can hold (Ikea, love them) and just put an inch or so in there. When she's sitting in her highchair, let her try drinking from this big glass. You'd be shocked how easy they pick it up. Ava drinks soooo much better when she uses a big cup. I never seem to get half the milk into her with a sippy.

  • I agree with everyone else...I give my DS a straw or one of the straw cups and he has no idea what to do with it.  He just chews on the straw.  I think Hannah is quite advanced!

  • Leah likes to drink for a straw better too. I don't see anything wrong with it.  I like Davez suggestion to. L loves to drink from our glasses when we have water so I let her.  She likes it way better to the point she won't drink from a sippy if she sess your regular glass or straw. Drives my DH crazy.
  • My pedis recommend the straw over the sippy cup.  It's better for their teeth, for one thing.  We've gone straight from the breast to the straw both times.  They have no idea what to do with a sippy cup!  So I think you're on the right track giving them straws.
  • J only used a regular sippy for about a month, she figured out how to tilt and drink and we were fine).  BUT.....I hated them, they made a mess, always leaking.  So we decided to see if she would use a straw sippy (from munchkin) she picked it up within a few minutes and we have not turned back.  I see no reason as to why not to use a straw cup.
  • Campbell's speech therapist actually prefers straw cups over sippy cups.  She says extended, long-term use of sippy cups can cause a tongue thrust (or something) that isn't good...  So, lucky for me, DD prefers a straw cup as well..
  • Nubby has a great no-spill straw flip cup that you should try!  I bought one for Audrey, but she hasn't figured out the straw yet.  She just recently mastered the cup.  And only very recently figured out she can arch her back and hold the cup up to get it all out.  (Kind of funny, looks like she's chugging a beer!!)

Anyway, check out the nubbys.  That'll solve your mess in public :)

  • Thank you for the advice.  It's intersting to know about the tounge thrust with sippy cups...I didn't know about that either.  Davez I will look into a small glass as well.  As for being advanced maybe she is in the drinking department but my almost 11 month old still isn't crawling. Lol!

  • let's be honest here, Ava's advanced drinking skillz are most likely a reflection on her heritage. (Irish). lol.
