3rd Trimester

If you took the 3 hour glucose come in

I just failed my one hour and I have to go in to the hospital next week and take the 3 hour. I'm really stressing about this because of the fasting for 12 hours before. My appt is at 7am but I'm very concerned about passing out. I have to eat right when I wake up or I pass out. During the day I can't go more than 2 hours without eating. I'm also battling dehydration but I can't keep water down, which is the only thing I can drink in the 12 hours. Not to mention them taking blood. I'm anemic which doesn't help the passing out thing either. I guess I'm wondering what your experiences were with the test and how it went, and how you felt. Thanks and sorry for the whiney post.

  • I don't have any of the issues you do and I had no problems all with the test.  By the time it was over, I was hungry and a little shaky but felt otherwise fine.  Also, they didn't make me fast for 12 hours.  I think it was only 8 or so.  They said NOT to fast for the full 12 hours because of being pg and that the 12 hours is for non-pg people.  You might want to double-check on that and see if you can fast for less time.

  • It wasn't *too* bad for me.  I couldn't have anything to eat after midnight, so I ate a little at about 1030 pm.  I'm the same way about eating-I usually HAVE to eat every couple of hours.  The drink they gave me was super-sugary.  I'm not gonna lie, it made me pretty nauseas.  I sipped on water throughout the 3 hours and that seemed to help.  The blood draws weren't too bad-they took blood 4 times, but they didn't take a lot at a time.  I know it sucks, but just try to relax.  Take a book or something to keep your mind occupied-I was so freakin bored.
  • Iam anemic to, and the test was fine. I did feel a little light headed towards the end, and they let me lay down in a room. If I where you I would definately bring a granola bar or something for when the test is complete.

  • i only had to fast for 8 hours (couldnt eat/drink after midnight and went in at 8).  the drink thing was the same as the first time and still just as disgusting but oh well.  they took blood when i got there, 1 hour after drinking, and she  'forgot' at 2 hours so i did the next one 3 hours and then 4 hours after.  then i had to wait i think 10 min to make sure i wasnt going to pass out before they let me leave.  between the drawings i tried to lay back and sleep b/c i was SO hungry.  i almost got sick a few times from the yucky drink but knew if i threw up i'd have to start over so i closed my eyes and sat as still as possible.

i ended up passing w/ flying colors.

as for you- i'd ask your dr about your concerns.  i drink water like a fish, and have no problem going for awhile without eating.... im not sure about that part for you....

  • I had mine last friday. Here is what i did

I ate smaller potions of higher protien or vegetables and low carb, low sugar foods for 3 days prior to the test. I find it helps to have something like nuts to snack on in between meals. It will also prepare you for 3 hrs without breakfast.

Dont worry about the fasting part, its basically no food after dinner (my appt was at 8:30am), an NO WATER till they take the first blood test! After you drink the stuff you can have water though!

I am also slighly anemic, but the blood draws 1 and 2 werent bad, but the 3rd one made me very weak, i ended up requesting a room and took a little nap (i brought a blanket). It helped tremendously! By the 4th draw i was very tired and hungry, but overall not too bad! I was able to drive and everything!

I was very worried about it, but it wasnt as bad as i thought! See if they will let you have a room, and tell them when you feel weak so you can lie down for the blood draws if necessary! Dont be afraid to speak up! Good luck!

     Oh and i passed:)

  • I had to take the three hour twice, once early on as a precaution and once this past monday.  I fasted for 12 hours.  I just hate alot right before, so if you have to fast from 7pm to 7am.  At 6pm I suggest a large meal.  Like the other ladies, I suggest bringing things to occupy your time.  I had my ipod, a magazine, a book, and my phone with internet for facebook.  I also had a bottle of water and a granola bar in the car for after.  I got a headache early on and felt kinda sick.  But you will do what you have to do.  If you feel really terrible the lab tech will stop the test.

    Good Luck!

  • I was really nervous about the fasting part too - my body does not handle no food very well.  I did not fast the *whole* 8-12 hours like they suggested.  I ate around 10pm (a small snack) and was at the hospital at 5am for the test.  I asked that I get the very first appointment possible.

I will admit I didn't feel well during the test, but I had 5 blood draws ( i think they messed up).  I also wasn't allowed any water, but I survived.  I tried to read to keep myself distracted but I was too dizzy.

    You will survive!!  Good luck!

  • I failed my 1 hour miserably! Then had to do the 3 hour, but they did not tell me that I have to fast for 12 hours.  Did your Doctor tell you this?  They let me eat protien, so I had some scrambled eggs in the morning before I went (because I too get really sickly if I dont eat first thing in the morning).

The drink is DISGUSTING!! Way worse than the 1 hour...it was like drinking orange flavored snow cone syrup.  Hopefully, where you do your test, they have better options...

And, it did make me feel pretty nasty for the first hour...but after that, the whole thing was boring more than anything else.  So, I definately recommend bringing a good book/magazines, laptop, ipod...something to keep yourself occupied.

I did pass the three hour test, but they did say my 1 hour was 1 over where they like to see the number...but the other 2 hours were fine, and b/c my weight, bp, etc. had all been perfect throughout my pregnancy, they were not concerned with GD. YEAH!

    Good luck to you!

  • They had me eat a 1/2 of a sandwich and a glass of milk at 10:00 that night... maybe eat something as late as possible...I only had to fast for 8-10 hours max.  It wasn't that bad.  I was hungry by the time I was done with the 3 hour but not starving like I was gonna die.  I failed the 1 hour test twice and then passed the 3 hour.
  • Hi, my 3 hour is scheduled for next week :9

My doctor gave me a sheet of directions that says 3 days before the test I need to add extra starch or carbs to every meal.  I can't eat anything afyer midnight the night before.

I plan on bringning my small portable dvd player and some stuff to read.  I am pretty nervous on this too - but I am trying to stay positive and not dwell on it too much.

Good luck to all the ladies that need to take it :)

  • I just took the 3 hour test yesterday. The drink was exactly the same as the 1 hour test....still tastes nasty!! I thought it went fine. Blood drawn 4 times. I was told I couldn't eat anything after midnight. My test was at 10:45 and ended around 2 pm. I was hungry and a little lightheaded at the end but nothing major. Good Luck. I'm sure you'll do fine!

  • I took the 3 hr and was told to fast for 12hours, have a high carb diet for 3 days prior, and was not allowed water during the test. I felt nauseous and light headed. I talked on my cell for the last 2 hours to anyone who could distract me. By the end of it, I wasn't even hungry because I felt so sick. On top of that, I failed the test. Good luck to you and just be sure to let them know how you are feeling during it. I am not sure you can get around taking the test.
