2nd Trimester

"not gaining enough weight"?

Saw my midwife today and she seemed to be concerned that I hadn't gained any weight since my last visit 4 weeks ago. I stayed at exactly 121 -- which is 4 lbs higher than my pre-PG weight. DH is now telling me to eat more! I'm eating healthy, balanced diet, grazing throughout the day, eat when I'm hungry and stop when I'm full. So what did you ladies have for weight gain at about 13 weeks?

Re: "not gaining enough weight"?

  • A lot of women are still losing weight at the point you're at. I really wouldn't worry about it. Some women are in their 20th week and are still 2lbs lower than their pp weight... don't stress.

  • I wouldn't worry about it. As of my last appointment I was still -1lb. We'll see how much that's gone up on Tuesday.

  • At 13, I was down 5 pounds. Stayed that way til 20 weeks, when I broke even. At 24 I gained my first 5 pounds. I'm now up 15 (35 weeks) and holding strong, lol.

And you should SEE how much I eat.... nom nom nom?

  • I was only up 4 lbs by my 20 week appointment - I lost about 10 lbs in 1st tri from nausea. My doctor doesn't worry about weight gain as long as the baby is growing appropriately. And if you look at the weight gain guidelines is suggests little/no gain in 1st tri, 1/2 lb a week in 2nd, and 1 lb a week in 3rd. I'd say you're perfectly normal.
  • I lost at the beginning, but to date I'm breaking even. Nothing gained yet.

  • If your eating healthy that's all you can do, It's not good for the baby to go and drink 2 milkshakes a day to gain those extra pounds. If you do eat more just make sure they are still just as healthy, as what you are doing. If it helps I'm still down, and my baby is measuring fine.
  • I'm still down from my pre-pregnancy weight.  I was kinda worried about it, but now I've just decided that as long as I eat enough and take my pre-natal, I should be fine.  The baby's measuring exactly where it should be, and that's what really matters!

  • Wtf?! I am so fat then! At 13 weeks I think I was up 9lbs. I never got sick and couldn't eat, it was the opposite, I had to eat to not be sick. I didn't eat healthy at the beginning, I couldn't. But now that I'm working out again and eating healthy and consistently I am still sort of gaining weight...anyway, I really wouldn't worry, you are healthy. That is all that matters, your body will add what it needs, don't add more for no reason!

  • At that point I was down 10 lbs.  I have since gained 3 back so now at 17 weeks I am down 7 lbs.  It was the same way with my DD - I lost in the first tri due to m/s and was back at my starting weight at my 20 week appointment.  My doctor doesn't like that I lost weight from being so sick but has not expressed concern.  As long as the baby is on track he is happy and so am I.

  • I think you are fine! I have lost 11 pounds and my doc isn't concerned. Most guidelines suggest gaining a few pounds in the first tri and then a pound a week after that. Keep eating :). You are doing great!!

  • I'm only up a couple pounds, but it looks like I've gained more...

  • I'm still 3 lbs down from my pre-pg weight at 24 weeks.  I wouldn't stress too much.  Continue to eat healthy and often and you'll be fine.  My Dr said that as long as you're feeling ok and the baby is growing, weight isn't a huge issue.

  • I'm still down nine pounds, I had my last appointment a couple weeks ago and my OB wants me to graze.  I started out chubby but should be gaining by now.  I just had my big u/s a couple weeks ago and it turns out DS #2 is big so clearly he isn't suffering from my lack of weight gain.  I'm hoping to put on a couple pounds in the next two weeks.  HTH
  • I wouldn't worry about it at all.  I'm about your size, and at 13 weeks I'd put on 2 lbs from my pre-PG weight.  I didn't have any morning sickness, I was eating well and enough.  My OB and midwife were both fine with this.  They said that they'd only worry if I didn't put on a couple more lbs by my next appt (4 wks later at 16 wks).  Now, as I'm midway through week 14, I'm up another 1.5 for a total of 3.5 lbs.  total.  Totally normal.

This. I lost weight in the beginning, I was down about 7-9 lbs at that point. I'm 21 weeks and still down 3 lbs or so from my pre-pregnancy weight but eating healthy. Baby is measuring on track and is healthy so my midwife isn't concerned. Its different for everyone. Remember, you will go without before the baby does because LO gets what it needs first. Just take your prenatals, eat healthy, and you'll be fine.

  • Actually, I believe I too was at 4 or 5 lbs at that time. However, I started out with a highish BMI (borderline overweight) so it was suggested I aim for around 25lbs total.
  • at 13 weeks...0! now at 23 and have gained 5 pounds.

Now I REALLY want a milkshake!! Thanks alot! :P

  • At 17 weeks I've gained a total of 7, which 'Your Pregnancy Week By Week' told me is the average (but gave a range of 5 to 10 for "normal" pre-PG weight), so where you are at 13 seems absolutly fine.  As you said, eating healthy and sufficiently is the most important part.  Eating more just to gain wait I can't imagine would be healthy except in a very extreme health situation.
