S/O laundry detergent...what about fabric softener?

The previous post about laundry detergent got me thinking about fabric softener. What are you ladies going to do about that? Any suggestions?

I can't imagine dealing with tiny baby clothes that are stuck together with static cling so strong it could pull the planets out of alignment.

  • Bounce makes "free" dryer sheets.  We do use those already b/c I only like the smell of my detergent.  For whatever reason the additional smell of fabric softner is gross to me.  I think they also make a free liquid softner as well if you prefer that.  I'm sure there are others too.

  • you shouldnt use fabric softner. it can compromise the fire retardent stuff they put on the clothes.

  • use dryer balls.
  • I use Bounce fragrance free dryer sheets. I have never seen the point in using liquid fabric softener when dryer sheets are so much more convenient and less messy.
  • Dryer balls.  Fabric softener is yucky.  If you have to use it, they do make the "free" or otherwise less fragranced stuff.  The balls are awesome, though.  Since using them, our towels are even softer.  I think it's because there's less residue from the dryer sheets.

This.  I've washed all of LO's clothes w/o fabric softener or dryer sheets and they didn't stick together at all.

This statement always makes me go "eh"  Maybe that makes me a terrible mother, but I dont plan on having my child near an open flame anytime soon. And if there is a fire, then Im pretty sure I would get him out regardless.

  • We are cloth diapering, and you can't wash those with fabric softener (it doesn't allow the diaper to absorb liquid properly).

  • Yes, you can't use any softener with cloth diapers.  But we will be washing her diapers separately from her clothes.  I bought Snuggle Free dryer sheets to wash baby clothes and blankets, and they came out static free, soft, and no smell of anything (used 7th generation free detergent).

I think the fire retardant stuff is only put on polyester clothes, like fleece, etc.  I doubt you'll be clothing your kid in a bunch of artificial fibers, so it's not really a concern.

  • We don't use it on our own clothes and won't use it on LO's either. Very rarely do we have any problem with static in our clothes.

Fabric softener is bad for HE washers (creates clumps in the washer from the high-speed spinning) and drier sheets give our clothes spots that look like oil stains and don't come out.

  • You're not supposed to use fabric softener. You can  buy dryer balls - this little tennis ball size balls that will reduce the static electricity in your laundry.
