adjusting to sleeping on a nap mat?

I am so worried about how ds will do with sleeping on a nap mat instead of his crib.

He has been home with me so the daycare along is a huge adjustment. I will only be working 3 full time days a week,so it won't be all week.

anyway, How can I make this transition easier for him?

He starts in 2 weeks. Would you have him nap on the mat at home? Or do they eventually just get it?

I made him a nice mat cover and new pillow hoping that would make him excited to sleep on it, but other than this I have no clue!

  • You'd be surprised. I worried about how DD would do as well and she passes out on it without an issue.  We didn't do anything to transition her at all.

  • Same here.  I've found that whatever she does at daycare has little to do with what she'll do at home.  She's been sleeping on a mat or cot at daycare for so long, yet I would never expect her to stay still on it at home.  I think peer pressure has a lot to do with it.  Your DCP are used to dealing with it.  Maybe ask them what they think?  They're probably not worried.

  • I was worried about this too, but DD has been fine. She use to nap about an hour in the crib at daycare, but will nap up to 2hrs on the mat now and she's only been sleeping on it for 2 weeks. The DCP said when they see other kids doing it they just go along with it. They said they never even had to help her to sleep. I am positive this would never work at home though, so I wouldnt bother having your LO sleep like that at home.

This.  DS sleeps on a cot at daycare now, and we never tried to get him used to it.  He had a hard time for just a couple of days, but once he realized that's what everyone is doing, he did just fine.

  • ditto all the others...I thought they were insane and she'd never sleep. She naps much better on her little cot at school than she does at home.

    Peer pressure is magic  =)

  • Same here, even at my DD's age!
  • Peer pressure is the best.  Once he sees everyone do it, he'll sleep on the nap.  I was shocked, but mine followed the routine right away and started daycare at 20 months.
