Advice on travel?

My sister and Mom really want me to fly to Canada for a visit in March (I will be about 24 weeks) and I'm hesitant to fly alone because I get anxious when on planes and don't feel like putting myself through the experience but I would love to see them.

I would much rather my mom fly out at the end of April/start of May to spend time with me here while my husband is away on business.

How do I tell them this?

Re: Advice on travel?

  • I actually flew at exactly 24 weeks and was miserable the entire time.  I really dont recommend it.  But as for telling them...I'd probably just say that you aren't comfy doing it.  Maybe your mom/sister would understand you wanting them to come out to see you.  You could say youre tight on money trying to buy things for baby and a plane ticket isn't in your budget right now...I'm not sure...it depends on how understanding of a family you have.....

  • You could always say that your OB doesn't recommend international flights at 24 weeks due. Or just come out and tell them that you don't feel comfortable flying and would like your mom to be there later on when H is away in case something happened.
  • I just flew from Canada to China at 24 weeks and while it's not as comfortable as it used to be, it wasn't bad.  Then again, I fly all the time and am used to it ...

  • I travel for work and will do so until 32 weeks, but I understand if your not comfortable.  You have to do what is best for you physically and emotionally.  Tell them to come to you.
  • Just be honest with them. They're your mom and sister.. They'll understand.

I'm flying home a week from today. Italy to Minnesota. I'll be 23 week and come home when I'm 26 weeks. This is the only time I'll be able to visit them before the baby comes. My grandma is hosting my shower while I'm home too. So flying just has to happen. I DREAD flying. I usually drug myself with Valium and wine. But now I'm just taking the Valium. I fully expect that I'll cry and probably even throw up (Yeah, I'm *that* scared of flying), but it'll be worth it.

  • I fly at least 2 times a month and just flew across the country to Vegas for work a couple weeks back. As long as you drink lots of water, take snacks and walk around you will be fine... oh and be sure to get a direct so you don't have to run around the airport.
