Canadian Girls - Mat Leave Question?

When are you starting your Mat Leave?

I want to take a week or 2 off before my EDD.  DH wants me to work up until April 30 (I?m due May 4, which is a Tuesday, so there is no point on working on the Monday).  He says that is the baby comes early we will deal, but if she comes late, then took 2 weeks off for nothing.

What are you girls doing?

(Non-Canadian girls welcome to respond, I only ask b/c we get 1 year mat leave, so we have a little more flex on when we can take it. As I know some of my American friends only get 6-12 weeks)

Re: Canadian Girls - Mat Leave Question?

  • Im not familiary with Canadian Mat leave, is it partially paid or totally unpaid?

If I wasnt getting paid, I would probably work up until delivery or at least until my OB recommended I stop (mine recom. me quitting 3 weeks prior b/c of swelling, but it was also August).

If its paid, I would take that 2 weeks off to get ready.

  • Hey hon!

I'm planning to work right until the end - I guess it really depends on your job environment. I work in an office, low stress (for the most part, but not on reporting days like yesterday and today!) and I have my own space so it's not too shabby.

DH wants me to go off May 1st, so do my bosses (it's his Dad's company and they're all concerned about my health/weight loss/active baby). I'd like to work until June 4th, which is the friday before my EDD.

Really...if you can work up until your EDD, that's great. But I totally get wanting a couple of weeks off before hand too (get everything in order, visit with family and friends, relax, sleep etc.)

It is partially paid by EI (unfortunately my work does not do a top up).  I believe I will be getting 55% of my paycheck.

  • I'm a supply teacher (in Canada)  So I am just working to get in all of my hours.   I will work up until the day (EDD is June 17)... as long as supply jobs are available, but then I get a few days off a week being a supply teacher so I get chances to prepare things.

If I were you I would take a week off before... so that is a middle point between you and the hubby!

  • I'm a Canadian girl!

Hopefully, if everything goes smoothly with my pregnancy, and I'm feeling good, I think I will work until my due date. If there is no baby by my due date, I'll probably just go off work anyway, and would only have to wait 2 weeks at the most before the baby arrived.

I'll probably be ready to go off by that time anyway, and won't have to listen to everyone asking if I had the baby yet, or what I'm still doing there.

  • wow for an entire year, that is amazing!

  • With #1, I worked right up until my due date (due on the Monday, worked until the Friday before).  I ended up being almost 2 weeks late, so I'm really glad I didn't take any time off before.

It's really a crap shoot.  You could go right on time, and regret not taking time off.  Do you have any vacation time you could use to get off an extra week or two early without dipping into your mat time?

  • My EDD is June 2 (wed) ... I plan on working until May 28 (friday). My work is pretty relaxed about "very" pregnant women and thier hours. The last two girls that went on Maternity leave came in every day during thier last two weeks but it was kind of 10am-2pmish. "as much as they could handle". I was thinking of taking my last 2 weeks of vacation in those weeks but figured I would go stir crazy sitting at home "waiting".

Thats what I wanted to do.  I have 2 weeks of vacation saved up...but DH also made a good point where, if I come back from mat leave in a year and the baby gets sick, I wont have any time off.

Maybe I'll take the week before...giving me a week of rest.

If she is anything like her mommy, she will be punctual! lol!

  • I am working up until I go into labour! But, I am working from home right now so it makes it much easier to do that.

If I wasn't working from home and everything was going well, I would probably work up until 2 weeks before. You can use that time to get prepared for the baby. There's so much to do.

  • My plan is to work up to the very last day if possible. I work in an office and dont have to put in for vacation or sick time up until the very same day if I want to so I have alot of options since my work is very flexible with taking time off and such...

Do you have any paid sick days that you could use instead of using your vacation days?

What i'm thinking of doing if I need to go off work before the baby comes, I can simply used paid sick days until the baby gets here. At my work we can carry them over every year so I have like 40 paid sick days so that's what my plan is.

Plus, you might not want to be off work before the baby gets here (unless your Dr. advises you) I couldnt imagine sitting home doing nothing when I'm anxiously waiting for the baby to come.. I'd rather be at work and be occupied so its not constantly on my mind..

  • Hey Alyssa,

I guess I"m in the minority! My EDD is June 20th, but I'm finishing after Victoria Day - so taking about 4 weeks off. I have 3 weeks paid vacation to use up, then my gov. mat leave will kick in. I'm VERY much looking forward to having those 4 weeks to myself since that will be the last time (for about 20-25 years) that I'll have that! Plus I'm on my feet pretty much all day and have a pretty physical job so I don't know if I'd want to work all the way up until my EDD.

  • I'm apparently in the vast minority here, I plan on taking off a month before. I also have a month of holidays saved up, so I'll probably be gone almost a full two months before my EDD- May 10th, with an EDD of July 12. I've been warned by pregger co-workers that it becomes almost impossible to do the job when you a)can't reach the keyboard and b) can't stand sitting for lengths of time anymore.

  • I plan on working until my due date.  If I am too tired, I will take some 1/2 vacation days.  Most first time moms go passed their due date.

I have also heard that it is good to save your vacation for when you go back, most day cares won't take babies if they have a fever or show signs of sickness- so you might need a lot of days for that.

I have also heard that women that leave early really enjoy those last couple weeks of personal time.  I am due the end of May, and I know I can find lots of stuff to do around the house at that time of year ( I am a big fan of gardening!)

  • I was off a month before my DD was born I had BP problems and had no choice, my DS I was off 2 weeks before he was born and this I plan to take a month off.  I work in the operating rooms as a scrub nurse and we have to stand for the entire day and sometimes have to stand for several hrs at a time for 1 surgery.  so I know I will be uncomfortable and huge so that is why I am taking a month off.  There is a 2 week grace period (1st  2 weeks) where you do not get paid for being off.  So if you have vacation use it, then you get some money.  I work PT at 2 different hospitals so I don't get paid for my vacation but I do get top up for 1st 6 month of leave from both places.
