Ask a mormon (msjcordova, you have inspired me!)

I am curious to see what people ask, so ask away! I am a LDS aka Mormon......

  • Okey dokey, tell me about the "under garments" that I have jokingly referred to as the 'magic undies' since I first heard of them.

I read a few Mormon blogs and have been confused about some of the terminology.

Please explain the difference between a temple and where you go to church on Sunday.

What is a ward and a stake?

A temple is a place where you do work for people who are no longer alive.....and they are not open on Sundays. A chapel is where we go to church.    A ward is a like a neighborhood and a stake is like a town of neighborhoods.

So, these are the only underwear you wear? Are you 'required' to wear them? Are they like granny panties? I'm sorry, I know that sounds snarky, and I don't mean it to.

The reason is that our wedding are held inside the temple and they will not let you enter the temple without a temple recommend. You must be an active member to obtain a recommend.

Well, I got married young and sometimes I have no idea why..... I think it may be because we are encouraged to focus on family instead of careers and such, but it is definatly not a must. It is okay if girls don't get married young!

No it is okay! You are not required to wear them.....it is a choice. It is said that it is between an individual and Heavenly Father on how you wear them...... Not quite like granny panties....kinda like thin clothes.

Were you married in the temple?  Was it difficult for you to have to exclude people from your ceremony or was everyone you wanted to invite able to go?

I was married in the Salt Lake City temple. It was difficult to not have some family members there, but we had a great reception to make sure we included everyone!

I did not go on a mission, but DH did! He went to Annaheim CA. Men can go on missions at age 19 where as women can't until age 21. I got married at age 20  :)

What do you think is the biggest misconception about Mormons?

And because I asked MrsJCordova, considering the tv show Big Love and it's popularity, how do you feel Mormon's are portrayed in the media? Accurate or perpetuating stereotypes?

Thank you! Alot of people think Mormons are Omish. We are definately not! And there is a myth that Mormons have horns......

I don't know what big love is.......but from what I have seen on tv and such I think the media likes to make us appear to be mean and cold and very close minded. Also they make us appear unaccepting. For example some believe we are racist.......Individuals may be but the church as a whole is not.

OH I am DYING to read this one. I am very very interested in religion, and the Mormons are my religion of interest of the past 2 years or so. I read Escape (about the FLDS) and watched a few documentaries about it. I also watched a really bad movie about the Mountain Meadows Massacre (September Dawn). Not good.

Big Love is a show about polygamists in Utah. It is really good, it is more about FLDS than LDS, but the episode I just watched had a ceremony in the temple.

I have a Mormon friend-in-law (completed his mission) who is married to a Wiccan. They just had a child, would the child be considered Mormon and sealed to her Mormon parent, or would she have to convert for any of them to be sealed?

The parents have to be sealed together in a temple in order to have a child sealed to them. She would have to convert......   Lol we are not allowed to practice polygamy, although it was practiced when the church was just beginning.

They think I am controlling because I made DH get out of debt before I would marry him. (He was in an enormous amount of CC debt.) Plus I am really blunt and I guess my "I don't care what you think" attitude really rubbed them the wrong way.

  • Thanks for answering questions.  I have been wondering about the LDS b/c I am a fan of Chelsie Hightower on DWTS. She often speaks of her religion and there is a youtube video and someone asks about undergarments and she said we don't discuss them.  So I was wondering what they were too.
  • I've always wanted to ask this, and please don't take it as snark:

Do you literally believe the Book of Mormon? Even the bit about John Smith and the secret language and hidden tablets and all that??

ETA- I think that's awesome about having him get rid of the cc debt!
