? For 2nd time mommies...

I see that right now slings are very popular. Did you use a baby Bjorn or sling? Both? Which did you like best and why?

Re: ? For 2nd time mommies...

  • I used the infantino sling rider with my second child. He liked to be held constantly and it was the only way I could get anything done around the house. I probably used it until he was about 4 months old and big enough to sit in the exersaucer.

  • Most people I know w/Baby Bjorns complain about how much they hurt their backs.

When DD was really little, I LOVED my Moby wrap.  When she grew a a little, the Ergo carrier became my go to baby wearing device.

Both of these are great - they still allow us to get so much down around the house!  I've had to stop wearing the ergo (too tight around my belly), but DH is still wearing it all the time.

  • I used a front pack a lot, and also a Moby.  DS is very active tho, so once he could sit and move around some on his own, he lost interest in AP.

  • I have a few:

Hotsling - DS liked maybe 2 times when he was a NB and then after that he would just scream and scream in it.  I don't think I was able to get him in it correctly.  After 6 mo I was able to do the hip carry - but it wasn't that comfortable.

Baby Bjorn Active - I liked it before DS weighed over 15 lbs.  I got it because I could buy it in a store and needed something ASAP.  I liked the fact that I could wear him facing out and in because he liked to look at things.  I stopped wearing him facing out though because there have been studies that show it is not good for the baby's hips.

Ergo - I LOVE the Ergo!  I didn't get it until DS was 8mo+.  I use it a lot for the back carry.  It does not hurt my back at all and DS is about 20 lbs now.  I plan on getting the infant insert for this LO.

I don't have the Moby yet - but I've heard great things about it and plan on getting one for this LO.

  • We had a Hotsling & a WAHM Mei Tai when DD was a newborn.  When she got a bit older we invested in a Patapum toddler carrier.  We'll probably use the Patapum with #2 and I'd like to get a wrap, as well.  I don't think I'll go back to a sling.  I'm just not much of a sling girl.

One thing I wanted to mention about the Bjorn & similar carriers is that they can cause a lot of pressure on the baby's spine because the baby is hung by the crotch, rather than fully supported under the hips.  Here's an article that talks a bit about it:

    https://www.continuum-concept.org/reading/spinalStress.html

There are soft structured carriers that function much in the same way with better support - Patapum, Ergo, Becco, Pikkolo, etc.  Just depends on what you're looking for, and probably how much time you'll be wearing your baby.  We wore DD constantly so support was a big concern.

  • I did not use anything with DS, but will definitely wrap this baby and/or use a sling.
  • i found the bjorn and other carriers like it to be extremely uncomfortable. i loved my slings. i had one that i liked a log, the Moby. it's made of t-shirt material and is soooo comfy. it's huge, and took a while to get the hang of how to wrap it, but it's very versatile and can be worn with the baby in multiple positions. it's also great for public nursing, and not too girlie so that my husband was comfortable wearing the baby too!

  • I didnt use a sling, but we occasionally used the baby bjorn. It was totally fine up until she was about 6 months. i then bought  a hip carrier, I am sorry, I forget the name, but she sits on my hip (like if I was holding her). Its the same material as the baby bjorn and super comfortable. What I really like about it is the ease of use and comfort. I like the idea of those slings, but damn, they seem very confusing to use and cumbersome to get in/out of. I may exlopre them again, but well see.

  • I used a hotsling when my DD was really little. I liked it at first, but as she got bigger, it just really got to be uncomfortable. When she was older I got a Moby Wrap (which you can also use with newborns, I just didn't have one when she was that little). I really liked my Moby!
  • We started off with the bjorn with dd1 and we really did like it. It was comfortable enough, but around 12 or 15lbs (for me, not dh) it became too much of a stress on my neck and shoulders.

We then bought our sling (adjustable pouch, actually, from www.kangarookorner.com and we loved that. We used it a ton up until a year old.

Then with dd2 I wanted something that would be a bit more heavy duty and would last longer, age wise. We got the Ergo carrier when I was still pg with dd2 and we used it with dd1 who was around 2 and it was awesome!! That's still our #1 carrier right now out of the 3. The only one we even have unpacked, actually. The belt around the waist is really what does it - it distributes the weight sooooo evenly, you can't even feel it almost. I never did use the infant insert with dd2, but hope to try it out this time around.

Each is good for their own purpose, but if you're thinking of something liek the Bjorn (which gets the most hype I think), spend the few extra $$'s and get the Ergo. SO much more comfortable and it will last SO much longer.

  • DS hated the sling but loved the Bjorn. I think the sling made him too cramped.

  • I used both with DD and couldn't have survived without them.  She hated her stroller, car seat, etc.  The sling I used more as a newborn and then the bjorn once she got older.
  • I had a bjorn that we used some (honestly, I didn't like the thoughts of DS in it for too long for the hip issues mentioned, but our doc said it was fine for short durations).  I also bought a sling and never used it because DS HATED it. I forgot what kind, but I had it custom made and paid $80 for it.

My advice is to wait until LO is here, and then try some options(in stores or borrow from friends) and see what the baby likes.  This is also my recommendation for swings, bouncers, play mats, etc.  We have so much stuff that we just KNEW DS would love, but honestly, he didn't use much of it at all.

  • I used the bjorn then the Ergo when my son was a bit older. I couldn't grasp the actual slings, but the Ergo (although ugly as sin) was amazing.
  • i got a bjorn and it got really uncomfortable and my mom bought me a Ergo Baby and i love it!! ( my advice if you waste ur $$ on the Bjorn u might as well spend that extra money and buy the Ergo!!)

  • I used a moby wrap with DD. She liked to be held all.the.time. so the moby wrap was the only way I got anything done. I got the bjorn (sp) as a shower gift, but never used it. I don't think the bjorn had enough head support. DH, however, did use the bjorn, but only because he could never figure out how to tie the moby.
  • I have the Bjorn and Moby Wrap.  I used the Moby maybe twice, because of the issues of "wrapping" myself with baby.  I did like it when I could manage it.

I've decided to go with a Mamma's Milk Sling for this LO.  It's about the same price as a Moby, but far easier to manage when out-and-about.

  • We had a hotsling and another pouch sling that was larger. The large one was great for DH as he just fit much better in it. I now have a Mei Tei and a Moby that I am hoping to use with the new one. I'll let you know how they go!
  • Moby wrap with DS.  I LOVE LOVE LOVE the moby.  I will be using it with this LO as well.
  • Sling!

Hated the Bjorn, it killed my back and shoulders and made me feel like hunching all the time. Love, Love, Looooved my sling though! DH likes the Bjorn better though but that may be because the sling was pink!

My 2 girls, both born on a Friday the 13th, are exactly 2 years, 2 months, 2 hours and 2 minutes apart! And Baby Boy joined us October 11, 2013! image

  • We did the sling....It was nice because the walking around in the sling would put Bryce right to sleep!

  • I used the Bjorn with baby number one and liked it. That being said, I think I will get a sling for baby number two.  My DD didn't like the Bjorn until she was a month old. I will need to put this baby in something sooner than that and have heard babies tolerate the sling better.  I am also considering the Ergo carrier.
