I had a m/c at 8 weeks (blighted ovum) in February 2008. I went on to have a healthy baby girl in 2009. We were blessed with a surprise BFP in November! We were THRILLED to have actually conceived on our own without any fertility treatments.
We went in for our NT scan at 11w6d and that is when everything changed. The fluid behind the neck was so large (measuring 4.3) they didn't even bother with the bloodwork portion of the test. We had to wait 3 long days to meet with genetic counselors and were given a 1:3 chance of a genetic abnormality.
We opted to have a CVS test done that day. The CVS test has a 1:100 chance of m/c but with the odds of 1:3 of an abnormality we took that chance. The test was quick and pretty painless. After the test a doctor came in and did a really long and involved u/s. We learned that our sweet baby had a lot of issues. The intestines hadn't descended into the abdomen, there was a gap between the first and middle fingers, and some cysts on the brain. They couldn't check for heart defects because it was so early.
Our test results (FISH results come back within 1 -2 days) came back positive for T18 (Edward's Syndrome). We were devastated and advised to meet with a MFM to discuss things further. A few days later we met with a MFM and after having a long discussion he did an u/s and we learned our sweet baby no longer had a h/b.
I was 13w2d pg. We scheduled a D&E for the next day(this past Tuesday). It was the longest and hardest day of my life! We went to the MFM office early the next morning where they gave me some pills to take and a suppository to help soften my cervix. I was sent to the hospital where we got a private room in the pre-op area. I started cramping right away. I had an IV so the nurses gave me meds to help with the pain. In the early afternoon my water broke and that was the hardest part of the whole day. I was SO upset. I finally went in for the D&E around 4:00pm.
I felt fine after (physically) and it was a lot like my recovery from the D&C I had a few years ago. Emotionally I'm taking things one day at a time. Our sweet baby (we decided not to find out the sex) is being cremated and buried at a local cemetary.
I'm so sad that a board like this even exists but thankful for the support it provides.
