Worried about my dog & baby..

My dog is so protective of me, he has never snapped or bitten anyone but always has to be right next to me all the time. I'm really concerned about how he'll be when the baby comes. Any tips/advice is appreciated. Thanks in advance!

Re: Worried about my dog & baby..

  • I let my dog sniff everything that comes into our house for our LO. And before we come home with the baby we'll bring home the blanket from the hospital for her to sniff.

My dog is excellent around kids, especially babies, so i'm sure she'll be fine. We are just going to make sure that the attention we give our dog doesn't decrease or there might be problems.

  • My brother's dog was the same way until my nephew came, then he became protective of him!

  • I am worried about the same thing.  We have 2 big dogs.  One is overly protective of me and the other wants all of my affection, so I'm a little nervous when the new addition comes how they will act.

Thank you for the blog link in PP.  I'm going to check out the 2 books she suggested, Childproofing your dog and There's a baby in the house.

    Good luck with your dog.

  • The Dog Whisperer's tip is to get a life-like baby and "practice" having the baby around with your dog. Once you have more of your baby gear you can practice with the baby in the swing or crib or on a blanket on the floor so you teach them how to behave around the baby now so it will be a little easier once the actual baby arrives. Haven't tried this yet but I will give it a shot.
  • Where do you get a life-like baby doll to practice? Toys 'r' us? My dog's issue is TOO much love for children, so I'd love for her to practice on a non-living baby!
  • We had a bunch of dog-related posts a couple of weeks ago. You might be able to do a search.

To prepare for our baby, we have read Raising Dogs and Kids...Without Losing Your Mind. We plan to use some of the tips in there. We also bought the DVD from Dogs and Storks. We haven't watched it yet. HTH!
