Cloth diapers?

I cannot believe how expensive cloth diapers are! I work with a girl who swears by them, and she had me thinking that I would like to try them with this baby. I just went to a website where the starter pack with THREE diapers is $84.50!! Have any of you used them before? What are your opinions? I used regular ones with my son, just looking for input!

Thanks,

Danielle

Re: Cloth diapers?

  • Go to diaperpin.com and learn about different kinds of diapers and read reviews. Most of the diapers I am looking at are around $14 a pair and they are more expensive than most. The Eco Friendly Family board also has a lot of good information on cloth diapers.

  • Bum Genius and Fuzzy buns are my 2 favs from when my DD was little. We used them for about the first 6 months.  They aren't cheap but you have to remember your saving by not buying throw away diapers and by not clogging up landfills. Also a thought is seventh generation diapers which are biodegradable if thats your concern. gdiapers are also very cool but expensive.  I found some good deals on ebay too for cloth diapers.

  • It all depends on the diaper you buy.  The two most popular brands are Fuzzi Bunz and Bum Genius.  Both run at a little under $20 per diaper, new/firsts condition.  But we buy most of ours at Fuzzibunzseconds.net and get them at a cheaper price for minor imperfections.  I'm guessing she buys some really fancy diapers, like Organic Bum Genius or something.  And considering that your diapers will last through at least one kid in most cases, $20 a diaper isn't a bad price.

  • Its still cheaper over all. All of our CD related purchases are under $500 total. You will spend over 2000 k per child in disposables.

Look into prefolds with covers. Thats the cheapest option.

  • I just double checked Fuzzi Bunz prices....The perfect size (meaning you'll need 2-3 sizes to get your kid through diapers) are about $19, but you can buy packages for 12 for about $200.  Considering 2 dozen is more than enough, that's about $400 per size (my oldest son only needed 2 sizes).  Otherwize, the one sized are 12 packs for $215 so only $430 and you would be set to diaper birth through potty training.  But that's all preference, many people prefer the fit of sized diapers.

These prices are off their official website too.  Like I said in my pp, there are cheaper ways to get them.

  • Check out the FLIP system. Its pretty new, and its a good compromise between price and ease. You just lay an insert in a cover and you are good to go. Then you only need to replace the insert each time...so you need to have 20ish inserts, but only 2 covers or so.
  • My whole stash for newborn to 3 months or so will be approx. $150.  Most of that I can recoup by resale after the babe gets older.  Most of the stash is in excellent used condition.

Start doing your research, you'll be surprised what is out there for an excellent price.

  • Yes, they can be expensive, but they don't have to be. If you are conservative in how you spend, what kinds you buy, it is WAY less than buying disposables.  I didn't switch to CD's until my son was 1 year, so we have only needed one size (he's a fairly small guy).  We use BG's, fuzzi bunz, and some prefolds.  I bought some seconds and shopped online sales.  I calculated that I started actually saving money (versus his previous disposables) after 4 months of use.
  • We cloth diapered DD and loved it! We tried some different kinds along the way, but the diapers we ended up with cost about $500-600 for birth to potty-training. You've got to also remember that while $25 for one diaper sounds super steep...it's typically the one-size diapers that are in that price range, and they last a long time.

I highly recommend BumGenius products. We really, really love the organic one-size all in ones for after the newborn phase. I also hear great things about the new FLIP system, though I haven't tried them myself.

As another poster mentioned, you can also buy seconds or used diapers for much cheaper!

We've saved all of our cloth diapers and they're still in great condition, so we'll get through two children using the same ones. That certainly makes it even more worth it in the end!

  • My  momma has told me she will take care of the diaper service after my baby is born. She used cloth diapers with my bro' and I. She swears by them.
  • Thanks so much for all the good advice!!
  • That's really high.  Our starter stash with DD consisted of prefolds & covers and cost me about $60.  We've spent more than that since then, but that's by choice and the cost is still less than what you'd spend on disposables.  There are tons of ways to save when CDing - from buying used, to buying from WAHMs vs. big stores, etc.

  • DH and I are deciding between bumgenius and g diapers.  I was happy to find that they sell them at target.com for a lot cheaper than the website. Target only has 2 colors for the gdiaper covers, but they do sell all the inserts.  That may help to save some money.

  • Recently read the stats on cloth vs. disposables somewhere while doing some research (sorry, can't provide you with the location of the stats) but here it is:

    1 year of cloth diapering = $1,000

    1 year of disposables = $4,000

Overall savings = $3,000 on average

I think you're just seeing though that the "start up" costs of CPing are higher, but they save money in the long run, not to mention the environment!

  • Depends on the diapers you get and the sales you can find.  Normally for 3 diapers I might pay $45, for pockets, but I am always looking for a deal.  I loved using cloth diapers on DD.  I couldn't wait till we got home from a vacation where I had to use disposables.  Also consider there is a resale market too.

Your fuzzibunz price is overstated, that would be a print diaper at best.  Fuzzibunz doesn't sell direct.  Regular fuzzibunz price is 17.95.  You for sure can get those at least 5% off if not better.  They did try raising there price to 19.95 awhile back but brought it back down to the 17.95.

  • We've used bumg genius 3.0 pocket diapers with my daughter since she was about 3 months old.  We bought 18 and it was around 400 dollars.  I have been extremely pleased with them, and we have definitely saved more than 400 dollars in the past 7 months of using them.  The Eco Friendly Family board is a great resource if you have questions about cloth diapers.
