So DH hates EVERY name I pick out. He wants to use something either German (which is both our heritage) or Russian (I don't know why, but he likes those names).
I would recommend going to www.behindthename.com and clicking on "German" and then "Russian" names and scrolling through the lists and see if anything jumps out at you. That site is a good resource for legitimate, not-made-up names.
I think I might have posted it on this board before, but my Mom's name is Justina which I love. It has Latin roots, but it was also my great great grandmother's name who was from Austria. Not German, but awful close I think it is used in Germany as well.
almost all of the names on my list are german [fyi, this is the best german names list i've found]. i plan to adopt my kids from russia but i don't think most of those names translate well here so i think it will be good for them to at least have eastern european names.
here are some german names i like:
boys- wolf, ballard, baltazar [i prefer it with the h, though], fritz, ellard, berlin, hilliard, klein, locke
girls- caroline, carolina, adalina, liesel, berlin
i also like nicholai, which is russian.

I'm sorry to say this and I don't mean to be rude, but this has to be the worst German name list I have seen.
Berlin is a city, klein is translated into small and Locke into curl. Those names (if they even are names) are not used in Germany at all! Wolf, Fritz and Liese are names that are really "old", I don't know anyone under 60 who has those names.

P.S. I am German and just moved to the US 1 1/2 years ago.
i got the impression she didn't want trendy names. i personally hate anything popular or trendy as i grew up with a popular name and couldn't stand it. the most popular names in many countries are the same so they are no longer associated with a particular country.
i don't know if the op wants really common names or not but if she does, then the names you suggested are fine, they just won't sound any different from other american names and definitely don't indicate they are german . my family is from germany [i'm not] and that's why i like more traditional german names. liesel is more a jewish name than german, which may be why you don't recognize it.

My favorite German girls' names are Sabine and Liesl. I also hear that DD's name is also that of a German princess (Amalia).
Fave Russian girls' names are Marina, Mariana, Tatiana and Natalia/Natasha.
I can't think of any particularly German or Russian boys' names right now.
