So I never take my wedding rings off, and hadn't noticed any swelling so far, so it really never even crossed my mind that this would happen- until it was too late. Yesterday my husband and I went to go get my rings cleaned and inspected (as part of the twice a year warranty thing), and I realized that I couldn't get my rings off! Luckily the girl at Zale's was so sweet and inspected them on my hand and told me to just come back for the cleaning. So we figured it was no big deal and we could go home and get them off with a little lotion.
Well let me tell you, I tried every single trick you can imagine. I stuck my hand in a bowl of ice water, elevated my hand above my head for 15-20 minutes, I tried lotion, butter, vegetable oil...nothing worked. I did some googling and found a trick that everyone seemed to swear by involving Scotch tape and Windex. I tried that too, but no luck. There was no way these rings were getting past my knuckle and it started to really hurt. I decided to give it a rest and try again in the morning. I drank a lot of water last night and refrained from eating anything salty.
I tried again this morning and after lots of pain and thinking I was going to break my finger I finally gave up. It was really starting to hurt and I began to panic thinking that I still have 7 weeks left so the swelling will probably only get worse. The idea of this metal being stuck on my finger was starting to freak me out and I was afraid I was going to lose circulation in my finger or something. So I called the hospital and asked a nurse what she thought I should do and she told me I need to get them off today because if the swelling gets worse, it will be a problem. She said I could either come into the ER and they would cut them off or I could find a jeweler to do it, but that she recommends a jeweler because they would probably do a better job and make for an easier repair later on.
So we drove an hour to the nearest jeweler and I cried the whole way there. I was so emotional about it, especially since our anniversary is on Tuesday and here I am about to get the symbol of our marriage cut in half lol. So I was very upset, but the woman who cut them off was so sweet and didn't charge me anything. The cut is very neat and she gave me her card to repair them after the baby is born. My ring finger now has a big red indent where the rings once were. After that fiasco, we went into Icing at the mall and bought a big gawdy cubic zirconia ring set for $10 that I can wear in the meantime.
Sad day, but just wanted to share my pathetic story with you all. Also, I'm sure you all have more sense than I did, haha, but just a heads up if you are still wearing your rings and haven't tried taking them off.
Re: had to get my rings cut off :o(
It's sad, I know....I had to go buy a CZ today..my fingers are sooo swollen. So are my feet and toes...I am going to have to end up get my toe ring cut off because it is not adjustable....it sucks.
Ugh I hear you. I had mine cut off about 2 weeks ago. Same situation. Didnt think I had swollent that badly. I tried like for a month different ways to get my rings off. Windex, tape, lotion, baby oil, icing my hand, wrapping my finger in floss. Nothing. 2 other people tried different methods on me and still nothing. So it was off to the jewelers for me too. I cried the entire time as well.
I feel your pain. I'll be buying a cubic zirconia ring this Thursday at a Premiere Jewelry party I'm attending, but it just broke my heartt to have to cut my rings. The jeweler said I was lucky not to have lost a finger, it was cutting my circulation off. Better the ring than the finger he said.....I had to agree.
That's been my fear the whole time so I took mine off at the first indication of swelling (25 odd weeks..). the entire inside of my band is inscribed with a saying from my hubs so i didn't want that to get ruined.
I bought a CZ set at Kohls and wear the band only now. I bought them 2 sizes too big (I wear a 4 and bought a 6) and now even that's starting to get tight!
I'm sure they'll be able to fix it good as new once the baby is born. There's a chance that they have to make it larger anyways (my SIL's ring size went up by .5 even after the baby was born).

Oh NO! I am so sorry you had to go through that, that's so sad. I JUST took my wedding band off and gave it to DH to stick in our safe deposit box (I dont trust it in our house). It was getting pretty tight and although some days my hands were swollen and some days they werent I figured it was better to take it off before it "needed" to be taken off. So now I am just wearing my engagement ring, because its bigger than my wedding band. If it gets tight I will get a cheapo band to wear until the LO arrives.
Again that totally sucks, and I hope you can get them repaired nicely for after your baby arrives.
I agree! That was my biggest fear, whether or not it was rational. I was afraid of the "worst case scenario" if the swelling got worse. My lovely DH, always the jokester, said "Oh no! If you lose your ring finger, you will look like you're doing the shocker". ayiyi.
