Pregnant after a Loss

is d/e procedure same as d/c?

My hubby and i have made the difficult decison to end this preg due to some complications and just wanted to know if the procedure is similar.  Had a d/c in may at 10 weeks (babay measured only 8 weeks) but i guess a d/e is done after 12 weeks?  The only thing i was told  by our geneticist is something gets inserted vagainally the night before and then the procedure the next day. so ultimatley i have to talk to my dr tomo but just wondering if you ladies knew anything?  TIA

  • I'm sorry you are going through this.

I had a D&E with my m/c at 8 weeks. My doc explained that a D&E is when the body doesn't miscarry naturally, and a D&C is to finish a natural m/c. I had the D&E 1 hour after having the u/s, so there wasn't anything about inserting something overnight.

    Hugs.

  • I am sorry for your loss.

It is essentially the same (clearing out the uterus), but differs in technique.  D&C involves scraping out the uterus and D&E (typically done when you are a little further along) involves a vacuum/suction to clear the uterus and usually scraping as well to ensure everything has been cleared.

I had a D&E at 12w.  I did not have anything inserted the night before.  That might be something to dilate the cervix.  I guess they forced mine open manually at the time of the surgery.

I am sorry you are going through this (hugs)

  • I had a D&E at 22 weeks.  Since I was so far along I did have to have things (luminare sp?) inserted into my cervix overnight in order to dilate.  Then the next day the E (evacuation) occurred...  It was pretty traumatic for me, but hopefully it all goes smoothly for you at 13 weeks or so.

So sorry for your loss, i wish you the best of luck with the procedure and the healing after.

  • I am so sorry for your loss.

I had a D&E at 14 weeks and they gave me Cytotec to insert vaginally 4 hours before I was to be admitted to the hospital for the procedure.  The Cytotec was to help soften the cervix and begin dialation.

The most uncomfortable part was the Cytotec because what it does is start your contractions (like an induction)...My dr said that this medication gets your "labor" started and dialates you to about 4cm.... then going in for the procedure I was knocked out so that was as simple as possible I guess.

I am so sorry you are going through this.  You will be in my T&P

  • I don't know the difference but I just wanted to say that I am so sorry that you have to go through this.

  • I am so sorry you're having to deal with this.

A D&C is not equal to a D&E although even some ob/gyns use these words interchangably which is not correct.  A true dilation and extraction is necessary when there are bones developed.  A laminaria (made of sea weed) is placed into cervix overnight to allow it to soften and open.  Then in the operating room an ultrasound is used for guidance while a pair of small specialized forceps are used for the extraction.  A dilation and curettege uses suction and a curette device and is used for earlier losses.

Hope this helps.  I am truly sorry you are going through this.  Let us know how we can help you.
