Maven?

This name struck me today.  It was in the movie "Whip It" as a nickname.  I don't know if I like it.  What do you think?  Ever hear of it before?  Just feeling it out.

Re: Maven?

  • Maven (due to it's literal meaning) would be a sort of pretentious name if you ask me.

  • I like it!  Goes well with your other DDs name too - which I also like...

We had thought about Malen (mae lynn) for a girl its swedish.

  • Not a fan of Maven.

    Your DD is SO cute!

  • i don't know the meaning of maven but it's NMS.  it sounds like raven or like someone's last name.

  • Definitely NMS

  • I didn't realize it was a boy's name til I looked it up. Sounds unisex to me. I think it would work better as a nn.
  • I can see the appeal as it ends in the "en" sound, has the "Ave" sound like Ava, Avery, etc. In theory it sounds pretty.

But, I don't like it because of the meaning. The term maven I hear a lot. to me that would be like naming your kid expert, or professor, or something like that.

It's not a name that has a particular meaning no one knows; it's an actual term that's used that you're considering for a name.

I also think it's too close to Maisy (which is a cute name) for me.

  • I love it.  I also think the meaning is cool...why is it considered negative to be an expert at something?  I definitely think of it as a girls name, I mean it is only one letter off from Megan which is a very traditional girl's name.  I thought about using Maven, got about the same reaction you did although that isn't why I didn't go with it.  A similar name which is gaining a little popularity is Maeve.  I believe it's traditionally celtic but I think it is really pretty, especially as a MN.
  • Thank you everyone for your thoughts!  I still feel stuck and haven't mentioned it to DH, yet, (we have plenty of time and obviously don't know the gender). I have a feeling we won't end up going with it, but it was fun to explore. Thanks again!  :-)
